Dustin Snyder and two other volunteers have adopted social distancing practices as they care for fry at the hatchery. Dustin also shares how an important partnership with the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council has enabled the hatchery to use cryogenically frozen milt for stock rebuilding, in response to the Fraser River's N ow more than ever, we can all appreciate the value of community. The salmon community is no exception. All around the province, stewards are continuing to restore habitat, operate salmon enhancement facilities, engage in citizen science work and much more – while of course respecting physical distancing guidelines. Here, we'd like to share with you just a few stories of adaptation and perseverance. STREAMKEEPERS On a road trip to the Comox Valley, PSF met with volunteers from Millard-Piercy Watershed Stewards in Courtenay, who are carrying out important habitat assessment work focused on collecting data on streambed composition, stream vegetation and water quality. This assessment is part of the group's ongoing program to evaluate fish habitat in an urbanized salmon system, which is especially important given the significant water flow variability of Piercy Creek. PSF's Community Salmon Program provided more than $12,000 this spring to aid in the Millard-Piercy Watershed Stewards' ongoing work in the Piercy Basin. This is a great example of grassroots organizations standing strong for Pacific salmon.
