Where better to view more than 600 sexy vintage cars than against the brick storefronts of this charming, late 1800s timber-mill town? Free admission for spectators. September 25, 2011. cityofsnohomish.com pomme leaders A CENTURY AGO, North America boasted more than 15,000 different kinds of apples with such evocative monikers as Dula Beauty and Seek-No-Further. Today, just 11 species make up 90 per cent of all apples grown on the continent. Fortunately, one can still sample more than 60 lesser-known heritage options at Vancouver's upcoming UBC Apple Fest – including the Ambrosia, discovered in the Similkameen Valley in the early 1990s. Held the weekend after Thanksgiving, the 21-year-old $3 event draws massive crowds that manage to schlep home 13,000-plus kg of apples – even after a day jammed with grafting and cider-pressing demos, a kids' interactive orchard, food fair, craft vendors and spirited bartering for trees drafted onto dwarfing rootstock (botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/apple-festival). –Kerry Banks . .
