RENDERING COURTESY DHK ARCHITECTS INC. AUGUST 2019 | 47 The Summit at Quadra Village – was inspired by the simple lines of Scandinavian facilities to create clean white walls accented with wood finish vinyl floors and millwork. Tall win- dows bring natural light deep into the building. "We worked very hard to cre- ate a minimalist, warm interior, an appearance that would not become dated over the years," says principal Gerry Pilon. Barnes adds, "The design also strove to minimise the intrusion of the health-care elements." Both Pilon and Whetter agree that the key mechanism enabling the project to be executed smoothly was a series of 10 meetings, scheduled several weeks apart and each last- ing a day. "They involved CRD, Island Health, designers, builders, mechani- cal, electrical, and so forth," says the latter. "Every element of Summit was discussed in forensic detail: where would the kitchen be located? How will the linen be transported? How will everything flow? "And after each meeting we trans- lated the input into design drawings, which in turn were fine-tuned. This LOCATION 955 Hillside Avenue, Victoria, B.C.
