salmon Steward magazine 15 Make Pacific salmon a part of your legacy Smart Giving Your investments can pay dividends for generations to come. Directly donating appreciated publicly traded shares or mutual funds to PSF may not only result in significant tax savings, but also help fund future scientists through bursaries and awards, or support dedicated Community Salmon Program grants. Now is the time to speak with your financial adviser or tax professional to learn more. When planned properly, the tax savings will be significantly higher than if you give a gift of cash, as you will avoid paying tax on any capital gains realized. Naturally, there are a few guidelines to follow, including: • the shares or mutual funds must be held outside a registered account in order to qualify; • the gift will be made via electronic transfer from your brokerage account to PSF's account. You'll need to complete the necessary forms (available at psf.ca) in order to start the process; • while most securities sell almost immediately, other transactions may take longer to complete, so be sure to make the gift well before December 31 to ensure you receive a tax receipt for the 2018 tax year. Of course, there is no substitute for good tax advice. We encourage you to seek out a professional to help develop a charitable giving plan that makes sense for you and will offer the greatest impact for the future of wild Pacific salmon. "My annual gift of securities to PSF is the best investment I can make to help ensure that wild Pacific salmon not only survive but thrive." — Eric Patel, longtime PSF Donor WE ARE HONOURED that a number of donors have shared with us the intent to leave a gift in their will for the Pacific Salmon Foundation. Their reasons are varied, and the gifts will come in all sizes, but they have one thing in common – the givers recognize that "leaving something for the salmon" is also a legacy gift for their children, grandchildren and the community as a whole. As one donor said: "We are fortunate to have moved to B.C. and made it our home. It is a privilege to live in such a beautiful place and enjoy the benefits and well-being provided by the relatively unspoiled natural environment we have found here on the West Coast. Our governments struggle to meet the ever-increasing demands of a growing population. Only the initiatives of individuals and proven NGOs truly committed to environmental stewardship can ensure future generations will also be able to enjoy these benefits." A gift to the Pacific Salmon Foundation in your will can help protect British Columbia's lifeblood species.
