J UNE 2018 | 37 PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY THE SANSIN CORPORATION Engineered Wood Products stood off from the membrane-clad plywood with vertical cleats, so that almost all the water is shed and the wood members can breathe. Prefabricated panels with planned random staggering of the joints allow the cladding system to be easily replaced as required in the future. Kanaka Creek Forest Products, one of the few remaining custom cut saw mills in B.C., will do orders from one piece to 100 units. "Most larger mills are set up to cut certain products and they are really efficient at that, but we do exactly the opposite and we are very diversified," says Pete Polderman, president. "We did the interior wood products for a number of the 2010 Olympic venues, including the Olympic Oval, and we cut some components for the media centre at Robson Square." Polderman says he also works with civic governments that are doing tree removal, and his team reuses the trees by turning them into a component that can be used in the new structure. "It's a form of environmental sustainability," he says. A D H E S I V E S Henkel, a leader in wood adhesives for CLT and engineered wood products, has launched their latest product addition, Loctite HB X xx2 Purbond (with xx referring to the product assembly time). "This is a one compo- nent moisture curing adhesive that meets the requirements of all current and proposed mass timber standards, for both Canada and the U.S., and for all wood species," says Chris Whelan, senior business development manager, engineered wood adhesives. "2017/18 has seen dramatic changes in adhesive requirements for CLT, par- ticularly as they relate to fire performance," he says. "Henkel has worked closely with code committee groups and industry to meet all new fire performance testing, and to show equivalency in performance to solid wood. With proposed changes to building codes moving forward to allow buildings up to 18 storeys, manufacturers, architects and engineers can confidently specify CLT and glulam produced with Loctite HB X xx2 Purbond, knowing it meets the latest performance requirements for tall wood buildings, without the use of formaldehyde or solvents." He adds sustainability is a Henkel cornerstone, and providing adhesive solutions that offer a healthy work place, and building components that meet the most stringent ecological standards, as well as doing it with high efficiency, provides for ecological and cost-effective building solutions for future generations. W O O D P R O T E C T I O N The Sansin Corporation, a leader in environmentally-friendly, high- performance wood protection, launched its Precision Coat line of products, specially formulated for factory-finishing and machine applica- tion. "Our Precision Coat products have been developed to meet the demand for mass timber and engineered wood application that can balance wood protection and performance along with stunning colour and esthetics," says Sjoerd Bos, managing director at Sansin. "As the use of mass timber, engineered wood and specialty wood continues to grow, architects, engineers, and builders can rely on Sansin's professional-grade Precision Coat products." Sansin offers a wide range of factory finish products including undercoat treatments, interior and exterior factory finishing systems, preservatives, fire retardants, and specialty topcoats for all types of wood substrates. The KP-12 undercoat series is a must for protecting CLT, Glulam and other engineered wood. Low-VOC, penetrating and imperceptible to the eye, KP-12 stabilizes wood, protects against moisture absorption and prevents discoloura- tion – yet can be easily top coated with a finish.
