J UNE 2018 | 29 Waterproofing Maxxon DPM is a unique two-component, mois- ture tolerant, high-density, chemically-enhanced epoxy product that prevents the passage of water vapour and moisture through concrete floors, either on or below grade. Its big advantage is that it eliminates delamination of adhesives, floor cov- erings, and coatings, plus it also prevents capillary infiltration of oil or other chemicals from the ground, thus making it an effective product for the treatment of oil contaminated slabs. Maxxon MVP is also a two-component, low-viscos- ity, solvent-free, chemically enhanced epoxy product for preventing water vapour and moisture through concrete floors; its one coat application (on either dry or moist concrete) means that underlayment systems can be installed the following day, thus saving consid- erable time and labour costs. Bruce Duncan, international sales manager for American Hydrotech, is well aware that not all water- proofing membranes are created equal, especially for use in his area of expertise: green roofs. "I recently heard a professional in the field refer to green roofs as the 'new asbestos' of the construction industry, and as irritating as it was to hear green roofs derided in such a manner, he had a point," he says. "That's because I've seen too many cases in which green roof membranes have to be replaced after just a few years because they were substandard to begin with." Hydrotech's Blue Roof assemblies are the next step in high-performance, rooftop-based stormwa- ter management, which cities and municipalities are increasingly obliging building developers to handle more volumes of. In a Blue Roof, the roof drains incorporate a restrictor to dramatically slow down water flow off the roof. This restrictor is often a simple cone- shaped steel or cast iron insert bolted into the drain body at a prescribed fashion and height. In normal, light rain events, the restrictor allows water to eas- ily drain at the membrane level, and in heavier rains the large amount of water will overwhelm the open- ings in the restrictor and the water will back up to a predetermined depth, eventually leaving the roof at a prescribed flow rate. Duncan says, "This restricted flow prevents the receiving sewer system from overflowing and caus- ing common issues like flooded basements, streets, and other problems," and he adds that at the core of the Blue Roof advantage is Hydrotech's Monolithic Membrane 6125 hot fluid applied rubberized asphalt waterproofing/roofing system, originally designed for waterproofing applications, but perfect for wet or submerged applications such as planters, pools, water features, or vegetated roofs.
