A PR IL 2018 | 5 PERSPECTIVE by MARIA COOK Architecture Canada | RAIC Manager, Communications and Advocacy T he 2018 Festival of Architecture, which takes place May 30 to June 2 in Saint John, New Brunswick, is a great chance to combine work with leisure in a charming historic city on the beautiful Bay of Fundy. Co-hosted by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the Architects' Association of New Brunswick (AANB), the four-day conference offers a wide range of continuing education sessions, inspiring speakers, keynotes, parties, recre- ational offerings, and a trade show. This year's theme, Ports and Portals: Getting There From Here, expresses the unique character of Saint John. As a historic port and the oldest incorporated city in Canada (1785), Saint John looks to the future while enjoying a rich heritage, including the most intact collection of 19th-century commercial architecture in Canada. The conference home base is the Hilton Hotel and the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre, complemented by noted venues in the city. The program is designed for members of the architec- ture community at all stages of their career, and includes students and emerging professionals, licensed architects, graduates, and faculty, as well as allied professionals. Two highly-anticipated keynote speakers will travel to Saint John from Europe. Odile Decq, an award-winning French architect, urban planner and academic, will speak at the RAIC Foundation lunch on May 31. Her portfolio ranges from art galleries and muse- ums to social housing and infrastructure. In 2016, she won The Architectural Review's Jane Drew Prize for promoting the role of women in architecture. She was also a recipient of a 1996 Golden Lion award at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The second keynote speaker will be Diébédo Francis Kéré, a Berlin- based architect from Burkina Faso, who will deliver the keynote address at the College of Fellows Convocation on May 31. With projects across Africa, Europe, China and India, Kéré is known for combining traditional building techniques and materials with modern engi- neering methods. He is the designer of the 2017 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London and his first project, a primary school in his home village of Gando, won the 2004 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The Festival of Architecture kicks off with an opening night reception at the New Brunswick Museum and the Market Square atrium. A special exhibition, Music of the Eye: Architectural Drawings of Saint John and its Region, 1822-1914, will be on display. Delegates can also attend the show's official opening on the eve- ning of May 29. Known for the quality of its continuing education, the annual festival abounds with sessions from May 31 through June 2. Delegates can earn continuing education credits and learn from subject matter experts. Lectures, workshops, seminars, and panels will address an array of topics ranging from procurement issues, talent management and strategies for heritage buildings, to BIM, sustainability, and accessibility. The trade show will provide an occasion to discover what's new and discuss potential business opportunities. A series of 20-minute "Emerging Trend" sessions will profile new trends, techniques, and products. Fun tours have also been scheduled each day to explore the city's architecture and natural wonders such as the Bay of Fundy, home to the world's highest tides, and the Reversing Falls Rapids. A pre-conference day trip on May 29 goes to Saint Andrews By-The- Sea. Organizers have also set up a St. John River cruise and tour of the capital city of Fredericton, a day trip to the picturesque fish- ing village of St. Martins, (a UNESCO designated Biosphere Reserve), and a winery tour. Everyone is invited to an affiliated event on May 31 called Women of the Round Table –Charting Our Own Course. In partner- ship with Building Equality in Architecture Toronto (BEAT), the AANB is announcing an Atlantic Canada initiative to launch men- toring events and networking opportunities for women in the architectural profession. Also on May 31, the RAIC College of Fellows Convocation takes place at the Imperial Theatre, a 1913 vaudeville house where Harry Houdini once performed. The ceremony is where the College of Fellows formally recognizes RAIC members and distinguished laypersons who have made outstanding contributions to the pro- fession. Both Decq and Kéré will be inducted into the College as Honorary Fellows. The celebratory highlight of the conference is the Presidents' Dinner and Awards Ceremony on June 1. This event honours individ- uals and teams who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in design excellence, sustainability, and innovation. The emcee is New Brunswick architect and historian John Leroux. It all wraps up with a "kitchen party" on June 2, at the Diamond Jubilee Cruise Ship Terminal on the Saint John waterfront.
