22 | A PR IL 2018 Steel Building Systems Shields reports, "We've developed five new colours under the Expressence series for metal finishes that mimic wood grains and zinc; plus, our Matte Finish collection, which was originally developed for the residential sector, has proven to be so popular that this year we're introducing it to the commercial sector." Sean Lepper, VP and general manager at Behlen Industries, is equally bullish about 2018. "We're enjoying a very strong start in Canada, with a big and welcome uptick in industrial work in B.C. and Alberta," he says. However, Behlen has achieved a milestone breakthrough not at home, but in far-flung Georgia, thanks to the successful completion of the largest contract ($45 million) in the company's history. The contract was awarded in October 2016 for three indoor sport arenas that would promote healthy lifestyle in different communities, while also providing a place for professional athletes to train and pursue their dreams. Construction began in March of 2017 and was substantially completed by Christmas of that year, the outcome being two buildings each able to house 2,000 spectators and a larger facility whose capacity is 3,000 fans, located in Telavi, Gori, and Batumi along the Black Sea coast. Aside from these projects establishing Behlen as a trusted provider of steel buildings in Georgia, they also represent the first time the company has taken responsibility for the design, construction, and finance of facilities as well as their manufacture. "This bodes well for us as we explore other opportunities in neigh- bouring countries," says Lepper, adding that Behlen will also use its EPC approach (including hiring local general managers who preside over the construction process) to create two more sports facilities in Georgia later this year. As for the three new sport facilities, Lepper says Behlen's hands-on approach to all aspects of their development has resulted in structures that are not only functional but esthetically pleasing too, with clean lines and beautiful entranceways. These attributes help in making the buildings become staples of community activity. Finally, thanks to a new manufacturing plant in Hamilton, Ontario, Robertson Building Systems is able to capitalize on what Louis Volpatti describes as "a very strong market for steel buildings in all sectors." He adds that increased usage of BIM software has resulted in a steady streamlining of efficiencies in the development of projects and the co-ordination of the trades involved in bringing Robertson structures to completion on site. Robertson is currently involved in the development of a new assisted living centre in Regina and a new church in Swift Current, both demonstrating just how far steel buildings have come in meeting architecturally complex designs. Trinity Manor care homes will consist of 200 units in a combination of suites and individual rooms, and the facility also includes a chapel, saltwater pool, a gym, and a bistro. Meanwhile, the new Christ the Redeemer Roman Catholic Parish of Swift Current "is a challenging project because the structure is a diamond configura- tion with every corner at a different elevation and roof planes coming into the walls," says Volpatti. "As of February the skin was on and we were completing the interiors, and the church looks fabulous."
