A PR IL 2018 | 17 Precast Concrete Finally, Brian Hall, managing director of the Canadian Precast Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI), notes that his members have the tools to pro- vide Accelerated Building Construction solutions (total precast concrete systems), but clients must take the time to understand the differences between traditional construction and accelerated building construction. "Accelerated building construction [ABC] requires a paradigm shift in logic regarding project planning and procurement," he says. "When one needs to minimize numerous mobility impacts that occur in traditional onsite construction they do so by elevating certain critical activities into groups and to a higher schedule priority. "Interestingly, ABC does this by incorporat- ing modular and prefab construction methods for design and construction of permanent and/or mov- able facilities which addresses these critical groups of activities." These entire systems can be used as comprehen- sive turnkey project delivery methods, which saves significant time and will likely save money over traditional site-built methods. "The construction part of the ABC process utilizes prefabricated sec- tions, which are usually manufactured off-site and transported to the project where typically a crane sets these major components quickly, accurately, and directly into place," says Hall. "ABC provides a streamlined approach to every project where the advantages of manufacturing improves qual- ity control and saves money for clients who need to maintain strict deadlines." With ABC construction, the precast manufac- tures are usually brought on board the same time the owner hires an architect, "so this does require more time in advance to plan and provide feedback on design, but this all can be done while the construc- tion site is being prepared," according to Hall. Hall acknowledges that it may seem surreal for a client to work with just one supplier to design and construct four to over 20-storey condo/apart- ment building with levels of underground parking, "but times are changing and a total precast building solution is now becoming a popular choice for large residential and office projects."
