A PR IL 2018 | 25 Green Roofs ZinCo Canada has been working on new systems and technologies to address climate change issues of a different nature. Its new Irrigated Extensive Green Roof system offers a very efficient and inex- pensive solution. "Regions with a temperate climate like the Greater Vancouver Area and the Greater Toronto Area are facing increasingly dry periods. The annual average precipitation in the region is at times considerably below 500 millimetres," says Jelle Vonk from Zinco. In contrast to a conventional sprinkler irrigation system, ZinCo has developed an innovative capillary watering method that considerably reduces water consumption. The water is available directly in the root area and does not partly evaporate on the surface. Another great product from Zinco is the Fixodrain XD 20 that offers a protective, drainage, water retain- ing and ventilation layer in one. It is suitable for the expansive area of an extensive green roof, and even for inverted roofs. The two-centimetre-high Fixodrain elements are made of deep-draw polyolefin and have integrated troughs on the upper side that ensure that suffi- cient water is retained without it building up in the substrate. At the same time, a network of channels between the water retention troughs guarantees a drainage flow certified to DIN EN ISO 12958 standard. Firestone Building Products too has been look- ing at expanding its portfolio and earlier this year launched a new family of insulation boards called the ISOGard HD high density cover board, which offers the highest R-Value of any 1/2-inch cover board, lead- ing to greater energy savings. "The R Value at lower temperatures is greater than some of our competi- tion, and you don't have to increase the thickness of the assembly," says Thomas Hanzely, national sales manager, SkyScape Vegetative Roofing at Firestone. This year Firestone also brings its self adhered UltraPly TPO roofing system to Canada, as well as a new one-inch drainage board that actually quadru- ples the amount of water it used to retain. In a move to offer its customers a one-stop-shop when it comes to green roofs, Firestone recently part- nered with Greenrise Technologies, which has a team of highly experienced environmental horticulturists, scientists, project managers and accredited green roof professionals. "This relationship means we can support all sorts of designs and have one single source warranty for the owner, giving them peace of mind," says Hanzely. When it comes to innovative products, Next Level Stormwater Management offers a seamless integra- tion of extensive and intensive green roof systems. Its pre-grown BioDiversity Pocket is pre-grown from a choice of plants and installed into its StormCap pre- vegetated system. It offers biodiversity and esthetics where the building structure allows more weight. StormCap is easy to install and is enhanced by Urbanscape to maximize stormwater retention and keep weight down. As a complete vegetated roof system it uses qual- ity pre-grown mats, engineered growing medium and high performing base layers. "Needled mineral hydro blanket made solely of virgin rock fibre has superior water retention of upwards of 90 percent of water by volume, and can withstand freeze/thaw cycles," says Cristina Senjug.
