"
I took this photo of Hubbard Glacier during
a recent Alaska cruise. The ice takes 400 years to reach
the water, where it calves – huge chunks breaking off
with a thunderous roar. Glaciers appear blue because
their weight deforms the layers of overlying snow and
ice. Red, or long-wavelength, light is absorbed by the ice
while the blue, or short-wavelength, light is transmitted
and scattered."
