FEBRUA RY 2018 | 63 North Island Hospital Project 11 psychiatry beds, four psychiatric intensive care unit beds, and 31 emer- gency examination rooms. "The projects, from a functional program perspective, are very similar, although there were some differences, the most significant being that the Comox Valley project had an additional floor and is four floors above grade and one floor below grade, with one floor dedicated to mental health. In contrast Campbell River has three storeys above grade plus a lower level," says Raber. Both hospital campuses have two large, centrally located lightwells that bring in a great deal of natural light to enhance healing and reduce a patient's length of stay in hospital. Here you also find the striking central court- yards that provide a sense of peace and serenity – a theme consistent through- out both facilities. "People have actually commented on how quiet the hospital campuses are. I think this is a combination of the design with all rooms that have been walled off, but also because we have put a lot of onus on privacy and confidentiality. It's all about being patient-centric," says Sparrow. Interestingly, 83 percent of the inpatient units are single bed with their own bathroom, 17 percent are double to accommodate requests by patients who prefer some company. All the emergency exam rooms are hard walled. As with all new Island Health proj- ects, the hospital campuses are LEED Gold, but as Sparrow says, "we have gone beyond LEED Gold. They are the most energy efficient hospitals in Canada right now. The provincial government has a goal of 80 percent reduction in carbon emission by 2050 and we hit 73 percent when we opened these facilities." The most significant sustainable design features are the heat recovery systems and the large water retention tanks under the parking lots, which allow the groundwater to slowly dis- perse back into the local water table and stormdrain system. What truly stands out about this project however is the tremendous amount of community engagement that has made both hospital campuses what they are today. "The community and clinical folks wanted to be involved from day one and to know everything about the many programs and design. They continue to take a personal vested interest in our project, and this is something all of us can be very proud of," says Sparrow.
