54 | FEBRUA RY 2018 Composting Facility – City of Calgary PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY CITY OF CALGARY Maple Reinders and Bird Construction erected above-grade walls of both cast-in-place and pre- cast concrete wall sections; precast concrete panels formed most of the actual composting vessel walls, with each vessel roofed over with precast pre-stressed hollowcore panels, thus tying the internal walls together with the exterior walls (resulting in a robust structure with the necessary contain- ment for the composting process). A pre-engineered structural steel building system was framed over the whole building footprint, allowing Maple Reinders and Bird to efficiently install roof panels and to cast the interior con- crete slabs over the cold winter months. In total, the building used approx- imately 25,000 cubic metres of cast-in-place concrete and another 5,000 cubic metres of precast concrete, in addi- tion to 4,000 tonnes of structural steel. Colin Smyth, project manager for Chinook Resources Management Group, describes the need for odour management in the finished facility: "A residential area is located only five kilometres away from our site," he says. "Management was achieved by collecting emissions from the compost- ing process and blowing it through a biofilter that has two metres of wood chips, which are replaced every four to five years." Hartley points out, "Other than the odour control expertise, which came from our Boston office, all design services were completed with local architectural and engineering teams." While the construction schedule was meticulously organized, crews still had to contend with a historically wet summer of 2016. "At that point we still had 62 bare acres and we needed to pour 15,000 cubic metres of concrete, so we either delayed some pours or cov- ered portions of the site that required immediate attention," says Smyth. Berry points out that the City mean- while "had distributed over 320,000 collection bins and was purchasing col- lection trucks and hiring drivers – all of which had to be ready to go when the Composting Facility was finished." To which Smyth adds, "We wound up working seven days and some nights a week for the entire two-year length of the construction process, in order to meet our deadlines." In January of 2018, Berry reported that the finished facility "is operating as intended, and we're very pleased by the diversion numbers as well as the high- quality of compost being produced." Hartley concludes, "John Berry was very supportive in facilitating an escalated design process to allow con- struction activities to proceed early, equally supportive as issues arose, and he assisted with escalating approvals. Overall, this was a highly collaborative process between client, contractor and consultants, which resulted in a world- class facility and a great experience for all parties."
