76 | DECEMBER 2017 Canada Science and Technology Museum the project from NORR. "A dedicated air handling unit for this area of the museum provides zoned humidity and temperature control in order to protect and preserve the artifacts." Permanent exhibits requiring special humidity and temperature have a dedicated environmental control unit that was designed and constructed in-house. "This unit was designed to provide humidification, dehumidification and temperature control to closed cases throughout the exhibit areas," explains Allan. "A network of distribution piping with frequent branches allows for flexibility in locating the cases where these exhibits can be displayed." Greg Hebb of Morrison Hershfield Limited further explains that this specialized equipment meets several needs at once; temperature and humidity requirements are regulated for occupant comfort and satisfy ASHRAE A and B standards, while reducing energy consumed. His team worked with the design and construction teams on behalf of the museum to ensure the systems operate correctly. In keeping with their purpose as a museum celebrating technology, the building's chiller and boiler room have been left on display. "A glass wall lets the public experience engineering and see building systems and equipment that are normally hidden in the back-of-house rooms of almost every building," says Allan. Completing a project of this scope and scale within the projected timeline required careful co-ordination. The construction management team from Pomerleau Inc., using NORR's 3D Revit design model, implemented Building Information Modelling (BIM) during construction among other time- saving methods. "Using BIM we could co-ordinate all the components within the ceiling space, including steel, HVAC, plumbing, electrical and fire protection to maintain the clear height required for exhibit installation," notes Cloutier. "It helped with site co-ordination, avoiding clashes prior to installation, and some contractors used the model to prefabricate their material, reducing construction waste and increasing installation productivity." The ultimate goal of the $80-million project was to have visitors leave the museum more curious about technology and science, and driven to learn more. "I am excited about this being a launching pad for the renewed organization, where artifacts and current science come together, and are something Canada can be proud of," says Proulx.
