OCTOBER 2017 | 69 RENDERING COURTESY INFRASTRUCTURE ONTARIO state-of-the-art technology. "Old technology has been made new again with the installation of integrated pneumatic tube stations throughout the expansion that are connected to the laboratory and pharmacy, which are located in the older sections of the hospital," explains Bailey. Adaptability and expansion were key considerations and so a structural grid was chosen to accommodate future flexibility in planning for the current clinical program and re-programming in the future. "The structure is designed with increased design loads over the code minimum to allow for the opportunity for changes in use and to support changing medical and information technology equipment. The enhanced design loads also provide pathways for the removal and replacement of building systems, medical equipment and supplies," explains Kathryn Edwards at WSP. Another key aspect of the design of MDH is to address climate and site specific design issues, specifically pertaining to water re-use and efficiency, energy performance, and robust and dependable systems and as such, the project is targeting LEED Gold. The design will incorporate green roofs, energy efficient heating and cooling plants, environmentally- friendly water treatment systems, and utilize recycled content. Innovative heat recovery systems, including heat recovery chillers, were used to save on both energy and costs. "These allow us to take heat from areas like data centres, extract it, and reuse that heat for domestic hot water and heat spaces that need it all year round," explains Kurt Monteiro from Smith + Andersen. "For the most part, we treated the expansion as a separate project from the existing hospital. There were fairly minimum tie-ins, which included the sprinkler and fire alarm systems. Being a P3 model had many benefits. We were able to install systems that would provide long- term benefits. We increased the size of the air handling units that allow us to reduce fan energy," he adds. Outside, the landscaping also took this long-term holistic approach with diverse garden spaces that animate, soften, reduce stress, and establish harmonious indoor-outdoor connections. "Three interior outdoor courtyards, each differentiated with a unique colour and plant material palette, provide daylight and a connection to nature from within the building," says John Quinn from Quinn Design Associates Inc. These spaces function to offer natural light and some near-view natural greenery. A specialty garden adjacent to the Maternal- Newborn unit is themed with local, seasonally-significant plant species for a naturalized atmosphere. "Our landscape design responds to the site, urban context and architecture to both reinforce MDH as a welcoming healthcare campus and highlight the context of the nearby Niagara Escarpment," says Quinn. As Bailey rightly says, hospital construction projects are among the most complex in the industry and each bring with them a unique set of challenges that the team skillfully navigated, to which Arat adds: "We had a 25-month schedule and construction had be done on a site where an existing hospital was operating. I can't emphasize enough how amazing the collaboration was between Halton Healthcare, Plenary Group, B+H, PCL and the rest of the team. Everyone worked together to get to the finish line and were able to overcome any challenges and deliver the project on time and on budget."
