80 | OCTOBER 2017 reduce light levels when possible," says Kristina Golovanova, electrical engineer with SNC-Lavalin. One of the main mechanical challenges was that the buildings are set to be connected to a municipal waterline for potable water; however, the waterline was scheduled for completion after the FMB and Tri-plexes were constructed. "Therefore, temporary potable water reservoirs and temporary water connections were built into the design to allow for the storage of water delivered by the municipal trucks," says Poirier. "These systems were then modified once the waterline was completed by the municipality." Golovanova says the main electrical entrance is in the FMB, as is the 250kW power generator that ensures emergency power to MRB and FMB during numerous power outages in the winter season. The building's electrical panels are separated by type of use and monitored to observe their power consumption. "This can allow the CHARS complex to be a source of information for building energy consumption studies," adds Golovanova. "It is the reaction of the local residents that is the most important in our eyes," says Fournier. "Too often, alien building structures were imposed on them and disappointed them. In spite of the in-depth consultation and dialogue process, the challenge was to meet their high expectations. The residents appear to have accepted the CHARS as one of their own. It has lived up to their expectations. We are happy we met this objective."
