OCTOBER 2017 | 75 PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY METROLINX East Rail Maintenance Facility but Rolfe says that the partners worked diligently to accommodate this request, which turned out to be a huge benefit to the client. Another challenge of the project is the rail maintenance aspect. "This is the first project of its kind for Honeywell in Ontario. The facility will have many unique systems that we don't have historical preventative maintenance information on. We reached out to our Australian team that has worked on a rail maintenance facility along with leveraging our relationships with vendors to develop a robust support system as we learn the Metrolinx rail maintenance business," says Andrew Durbin at Honeywell. In order to finalize a full preventative maintenance program before the facility goes into operation, Honeywell brought in its operations staff early on to learn about the facility, consider any possible future maintenance challenges, and be involved in start-up and commissioning activities. "This allows us to gain hands-on experience prior to the facility opening. We have also engaged specialists in CMMS development, preventative maintenance program development and training, so supporting systems are in place," he says. In addition to the future physical expansion of the facility, a thorough consideration of future electrification of the GO Transit system has resulted in a design that allows all necessary work to be carried out at the initial stages of construction, allowing future installation to be undertaken with minimal interruption to the operation of the train facility at that time. "The ERMF is a great example of the public and private sectors working to achieve success on a large scale infrastructure project and what can be achieved when each party does what it's best at. The project team has worked together since day one to ensure that the facility is built on-time and on-budget and meets Metrolinx's operational needs," concludes Mulligan.
