FALL 2017 BCA A .COM 7 your BCAA Shom Sen President & CEO #BCAASAVESTHEDAY An employee's quick thinking saves a life Aneil Raghu, a fleet technician with BCAA Road Assistance, was driving home after a shift late one night last December when he saw a commotion. A crowd was gathered around an accident scene where a man was trapped under a car. Bystanders were trying to free him and, seeing the BCAA truck, flagged Aneil over to help. Not a first responder, Aneil wasn't sure what he could do, but he knew he had to help. "He's not breathing," someone cried. They had tried to jack the car up to get him out, but Aneil could see that the man's entire body was under the carriage. Aneil ran back to his truck, got a floor jack and lifted the car, ultimately freeing the man. People rushed over to pull him out, but Aneil held them back until the ambulance arrived for fear of further injuring the man. They were all relieved when the victim gasped for breath. He was in bad shape, but still alive. Aneil thinks of that night often; of his shock at seeing the man trapped under the car – and how he took a route he had never taken home and somehow ended up in the right place at the right time. Going above and beyond is the BCAA way. Aneil doesn't see himself as a hero, but as someone trained to care for and protect people. "It was a traumatic scene, but as a BCAA employee you know you can help. It's just in your DNA to take charge and do what you can to keep people safe." Has a BCAA employee ever saved your day? It doesn't have to be as dramatic as Aneil's story. It could be a story about a Roadside Assistance call, excellent service at one of our BCAA Auto Service Centres, Evo Car Share getting you somewhere on time or exceptional treatment you received on an insurance claim. Share your #BCAASavestheDay story and you could win a $50 gift card from one of our many Rewards partners. bcaa.com/memberstories The Extra Mile I first learned about Aneil's story when I saw it on the news (see right). I remember feeling so proud of this BCAA employee who stepped up at a time of crisis after a long shift. A caring and helpful attitude doesn't end just because the workday does. Stories about BCAA employees going above and beyond always captivate me, but they don't surprise me, either. Being in the business of keeping Members safe, we have the privilege of being there when our Members need us most. And that's where the best stories are born: from the insurance adjuster who calmed a distraught flood victim to the employee who drove a Member home when he fell ill, and the many Road Assist drivers who get Members safely back on the road. We have a program at BCAA that recognizes employees who go the extra mile for our Members. They are nominated by fellow employees who want to ensure those moments don't go unnoticed. The prize is a coffee mug, a small thing, but we have given out more than a 100 already this year. The look on our winning employees' faces shows how touched they are by the gesture. They don't see themselves as doing anything special. They are just doing their jobs. Thank you for letting us be there when you need us.
