16 BCA A .COM FALL 2017 Kirsten Rodenhizer HOW TO SURVIVE A LONG-HAUL FLIGHT It takes 11 to 13 hours to fly from Vancouver to Asia, depending on your destination city. Here's how to beat the curve and avoid arriving exhausted, achy and dehydrated: Pack personal comforts in your carry-on: Tuck in a toothbrush and toiletries, a light- blocking eye mask, earplugs, comfortable socks and a warm layer such as a blanket or scarf, in case it gets chilly. The more at home you feel, the more likely you are to rest and feel refreshed. Bring your own snacks and water: Some airlines offer a healthy meal option (hint: try the vegetarian or gluten-free meal, even if you have no dietary restrictions). But also pack some healthy snacks, such as trail mix and cut vegetables. Avoid salty and starchy foods to minimize uncomfortable bloating, and bring your own water bottles to fill before boarding. Pre-charge your gadgets: Certain aircraft offer onboard power outlets and others don't. Bring a portable power bank for extra juice, as well as a book or other distraction, in case the onboard entertainment system fails (it can happen). Stretch your legs: Experts say you should get up and go for a short walk, or at least move around, every hour or so to maintain healthy circulation and lower the risk of deep-vein thrombosis (blood clots). Spring for a better seat: Many airlines offer enhanced economy seats, with slightly more space, for a small premium. (We travelled on EVA Air, Taiwan's national carrier, in its "elite" economy section, and the extra few inches of legroom were a lifesaver.) Invest in sound-cancelling headphones: These are excellent at dampening noise from plane engines and other passengers. Wandering among its secretive, winding lanes, ornately painted doorways and hillside temples, it's easy to see why. Shop for everything from calligraphy supplies and wooden toys to stinky tofu (a local delicacy) at the town's treasure trove of a market. Then head to A-Mei Tea House, overlooking mist-layered hills and the East China Sea beyond, for oolong tea and treats like sugared plum squares (above). TRAVEL Hong Kong & Taipei
