All the floors are cast-in-place concrete flat slabs complete with drop panels and slab bands. "This was the ideal choice to suit clear span requirements and the desire to have a robust and flexible structure for future changes," explains Kamal Abdul from Bush, Bohlman & Partners. "The main roof was steel framing consisting of metal decking on open-web steel joists over wide-flange beams and HSS columns. The steel was ready for erection by the time the concrete floors were completed. We also featured nail laminated wood panels supported on glulam beams for the corner popped up roofs and the roof at the learning commons." Vertical lightwells have also been very strategically placed to not only ensure maximum light penetration but to interconnect all of the floors. "There are three light- filled atria that create dynamic spatial environments and allow for constant exposure to multidisciplinary work and the environments in which they are produced," says Dr. Burnett. The lecture theatre, which Dr. Burnett considers one of the stand-out interior elements, accommodates seating for 400 people and has operable partitions along the east side to allow the room to open up to the atrium. Continuous openings along the east side allow for the visual integration of the balcony area overlooking the lecture theatre and the concourse area on level two. The Library/Learning Commons is another striking area that has been configured to establish a direct visual connection between the concourse and the exterior, to maximize the open seating spaces with access to natural light and to create a cohesive, well integrated multi-levelled space. A central stair provides the vertical connection between the levels. When it came to the mechanical and electrical systems, WSP and Rocky Point Engineering were tasked with ensuring the building was state- of-the-art. "As one of the largest educational facilities ever completed in B.C., the sheer number of rooms and equipment to be co-ordinated required a large team to design on WSP's part," explains Andy Tashiro from WSP. Head back outside and you understand how the exterior and interior tie in together, uniting elements that are important to both Emily Carr University and the community. "The concept was a native plant palette and to use planting that would have been used by indigenous peoples here," says Daryl Tyacke from eta landscape architecture inc. Sometimes it is hard to do a project justice, especially one that staff, students and the community at large hold so dear, but Dr. Burnett sums it up best when he says: "Our new building will be a bridge between the east and west of Vancouver. It's the first time in 90 years that Emily Carr will have its own home and despite the challenges that come with a project of this size, we are extremely excited and proud of our new campus."
