AUGUST 2017 | 27 Metal Roofing/Cladding PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY VICWEST many of them are deceptive: for example, some stipulate that coverage applies everywhere except the joints of a roofing system – even though that is precisely where leaks take place." Cascadia Metals Ltd. is another company that experienced a slow start to busi- ness in 2017, but Vancouver-based manager Mark Friesen says it has since heated up nicely. "Metal is being used on roofs and walls more extensively, and I would credit the design community as well as end users for driving trends such as wood grain patterns on metal." Cascadia provides a wide range of metal products, in both coil and flat sheet, and specializes in high-end, pre-painted steel that includes PVDF paint systems. These systems mimic the look of woodgrain, zinc, copper and weathered steel. "It should be noted that paint systems have improved and go a long way in enhancing the popularity of metal, and our contribution in that regard is Cascadia Tex, a textured lower gloss product for roof panels and siding," says Friesen. John Robis, principal of Exterior Technologies Group, remarks, "Gone are the days of metal roofs and siding being thought of as amounting to just a square box, and products such as Radius Track available from our company enhance the architectural potential of metal by providing framing solutions for curved and complex surfaces." This is most evident in the almost surreal designs brought to life for the Edmonton International Airport Combined Office Control Tower (a facade of metal ribbons that seem to flow around the structure) and the avant-garde One North resi- dential project in Portland, Oregon, in which Radius Track delivered a sleek, light- weight solution for the deep aperture shading windows. Recently, Exterior Technologies was involved in the construction of a large data centre in Montreal that required the incorporation of an especially large Kalzip bar- rel vault aluminum roof system. "We extruded the panels from coils transported to the site because they needed to be about 300-feet long," says Robis. "This type of on-site work is prevalent in Europe, and we've been doing it since 2009." For his part, Darren Smith, national sales manager – Canada/U.S. at Engineered Assemblies Inc., believes market growth for metal roofs and cladding will continue "for at least the next five to 10 years, if not more. This is partly because we've gained the trust of the architectural community, to the degree that we come on board proj- ects early in order to provide good detailing and help ensure a more seamless result. This approach to business is viable even in lump sum general tender projects like the one we were involved in for the Edmonton police." Smith is referring to the 190,000-square-foot Edmonton Police Services building currently under construction, in which Engineered Assemblies has played a crucial role in delivering roof panels that blend into the metal cladding. "We're providing a high-performance system with beautiful curves and tapers, and the longest panel is about 138 feet, so it's an exciting project," says Smith. Smith summarizes the sentiments of many colleagues in his sector by conclud- ing, "When you take a look at a city like Vancouver, you see a large percentage of glaz- ing and a small percentage of panelling, but that ratio is slowly changing thanks in no small way to cladding offering far better R-values than glazing. Plus, to my mind, cladding has far more sex appeal if done right – and thankfully, building developers think so too." A Expressence line of roof and wall steel profiles with natural finish.
