J UNE 2017 | 77 RENDERING COURTESY GREN WEIS ARCHITECT AND ASSOCIATES Hall of Fame' atmosphere but to focus more on the Gretzky family life. It's about Wayne and all the opportunities and highlights that have happened in his personal life and in his family to today," says Edwards. "Working with two completely different products – whiskey and wine all under one roof – meant the marketing of each is completely different so trying to mesh the two concepts was a challenge. To make the winery side of the property have a home-like feel with large capacities of visitors we added soft upholstery, area carpet and personal photos. For the whiskey side we chose warm woods and industrial- look textures to reflect the distillery making process," adds Edwards. When it came to the mechanical and electrical systems, the building was slightly complex as it has two different classifications. "The electrical systems vary from one building to another, which electrically made this two different designed projects," explains Tony Monopoli from Dynamic Designs and Engineering Inc. Monopoli adds that the building is primarily an open wood structure, which also made lighting a little challenging. "The building contains mostly LED lighting with zero to 10 volt dimming and is controlled by a Douglas Control system with various occupancy sensors and daylight sensors," he explains. Head back outside and the landscape features a springtime water feature that will become an ice rink in winter. It even comes complete with a loonie buried at centre ice, dropped by The Great One himself at the groundbreaking ceremony in September 2015. To say the team who worked on the project are proud of being involved in such a significant building would be an understatement. "I am so proud to have been given the opportunity to be involved in creating a home for a Canadian icon and a hero of mine," says Martino.
