J UNE 2017 | 69 system provides strong resistance to ultraviolet, ozone and chemical exposure and hence a long life span. Enter into the two-storey lobby and you notice the wood accents smoothly flow from the outside in. "The wood soffit from the canopy transitions inside, so there is a sense of continuity," says McDonald. Individuals attending the building will see a modern, open and welcoming interior with a great deal of natural light. "The public area is functional with efficient accessibility to the front counter, interview and media rooms, and washrooms. These components were designed in this manner to promote a positive experience for members of the community visiting the detachment," says Rideout. The building has a spine that runs down the middle and all the RCMP functions radiate off that spine. "The building opens at either end of the spine; to the west towards the light and east toward the city and hills behind," says Francois Riverin, architect at Kasian. With 29 cells, the new Kelowna detachment will be able to detain and hold more prisoners – up to three per cell. Originally, the cells were located along Clement Avenue, but because single family homes are located on that street, Kasian moved them to the north side of the site. In addition, the Forensics section has been outfitted with "state-of- the art features to enhance police investigations and the latest technology [designed by Stantec] can be found throughout the entire building," explains Rideout. In conclusion, Rideout says, "I am very excited to have been a part of this building project for the last seven years, from the early meetings of choosing a site location to the final move relocation stage of this design-build project. The building design reflects the efficient use of interior space and the relationships between departments. The exterior building is a welcome addition to this area of the city and complements the beautiful Okanagan landscape."
