The Games make history, marking the first time indigenous peoples – Lil'wat, Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations – were partner hosts. 1986 Vancouver celebrates its centennial and hosts Expo '86, the six-month-long World Exposition on Transportation and Communication. The SkyTrain, Canada Place, Vancouver Convention Centre, BC Place stadium and Science World British Columbia were built for the fair. 1964 Touchdown! The BC Lions win the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup, the team's first. (The Leos win it five more times, in 1985, 1994, 2000, 2006 and 2011.) 1970 Face off! The Vancouver Canucks play its first game in the National Hockey League at the Pacific Coliseum, which is part of the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE). 1978 Batter up! The Vancouver Canadians baseball team is founded. It played in the Pacific Coast League until 1999 when it moved to Sacramento. A new Vancouver Canadians team was formed in 2000; the C's play in the Northwest League. 1979 Score! The Vancouver Whitecaps win the North American Soccer League championship. 1995 Echoing the design of the Colosseum in Rome, the new Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library opens downtown. So does General Motors Place, which is now called Rogers Arena. It's home ice for the Vancouver Canucks. 2014 Vancouver is chosen to host the popular TED Talks until 2020. 2016 Vancouver welcomes 10 million visitors! 2017 Happy 150th Canada! Vancouver marks the occasion with festivals and events throughout the year. Take advantage of free general admission at national parks and historic sites such as the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site. 1960 1970 1980 1990 2000 2010 2017 HITTING 100 A NEW MILLENNIUM 1983 BC Place stadium opens as the world's largest air-supported dome. (It now has a retractable roof.)
