A PR IL 2017 | 57 Other innovative features are the spiral staircases that rise up from some of the suite balconies on level six to private rooftop patios. From here you witness breathtaking views of the North Shore mountains and the city's downtown core. "Tom Pappajohn [from Jameson Development Corp.] wanted to activate the rooftop and provide private gardens to the units, so because of the height restriction we chose spiral staircases. These provide an interesting visual element to the building, and also gives it more of an industrial heritage look," explains Mok. Head on inside the building, and this same close attention to detail and high- end finishes has been paid. The interiors reference the past while making full use of modern cues to create something distinctively contemporary. In the kitchen, a heritage-inspired hexagonal backsplash contrasts modern stainless appliances. The hexagonal tile continues on floors in the bathrooms where along with accents like brushed nickel pulls they juxtapose with a stainless single-basin, undermount sink to create a singularly modern effect – something distinctly Wohlsein. "Among the added features in the artist suites that are located on the first three levels are the artist slop sinks in the laundry closet. There is also vinyl plank flooring which is both impact resistant and durable," says Baird. These artist suites feature nine-foot ceilings throughout creating airy, spacious rooms and high walls for displaying artwork. "The suites range in size from the mid-400s for the studios to just below 1,200 square feet for the three-bedrooms, and many have movable wall systems to create versatile space," adds Maciver. On the lower level, there is a bike workshop, artist's workshop, a common rooftop patio, landscaped play area and resident's lounge. When it came to the mechanical and electrical systems, provided by MCW Consultants and Nemetz (S/A) & Associates, electric baseboard heaters were installed as well as a big unit subtransformer and a large electrical vault. The Wohlsein has been coined as one of the most anticipated new Vancouver condos available, and it's easy to see why. By way of explanation Maciver says: "It's one of my all time favourite projects. It was great to work with a developer who is so open when it came to creating an identity and character of The Wohlsein. Jameson Development Corp. were great to work with, as were the rest of the team."
