24 | A PR IL 2017 Paint & Coatings S Muted tones and research and development are influencing this year's paint trends by LAURIE JONES Smooth, satiny and classy are terms that can be applied to many products in today's market, but in 2017, they are just a few of the descriptors for paint and coating options that are encompassing the latest research to produce great products. CIL paint is unveiling the top colour trends for the year ahead, dominated by soft, saturated shades of vio- let, grey, sand, terra cotta, mustard and grey-green. "The colours for 2017 are mellow but with more pig- ment than the pastel-like hues of last year, emitting a warm, rich feel," says Alison Goldman, brand manager for the CIL paint brand of PPG. "Think clean, minimal- ist décor. The next year's palette is a reflection of con- sumers' craving for purity and simplicity." The hottest colour will be subtle, serene vio- let, Goldman says, announcing Antique Violet as the brand's 2017 Colour of the Year. "Next year's stand-out colour can be described best as a beautifully sophisti- cated and muted midtone shade of purple that leans heavily towards a blue-grey," she explains. Also trending for CIL are Stone Harbor Greige sand, Moderne Mauve tan, Silver Mountain Creek Green grey-green, Soft Copper Orange clay, Soft Cloud Blue light mauve, Neo Mediterranean Mist green and Sunnybrook Yellow mustard. Bolder hues such as teal, deep coral and onyx will be used as accents to balance the soft shades, Goldman explains. PPG Paints has unveiled a collection of 24 rich, time- less midtones with an earthy edge for 2017. "Taking the top spot as the PPG Paints brand Colour of the Year is a soft, muted purple with grey-blue undertones called Violet Verbena," says Valerie Jager, associate market- ing manager. "Pairing well with timeless grey, brown, green and deep blue, it is a versatile colour that blurs the boundaries of young and old or male and female, and it works well in any room." She says the 2017 colour palette is made up of classic shades with a contemporary spin. The earth tones are more vibrant and steeped in pigment than the natural hues of the past. "Rooted in tradition, the colours are warm and toasty, emitting an air of stability and bal- ance," says Jager, who adds that no matter what your personal style, the trending earth tones are adaptable enough to be incorporated into any décor. She suggests for the outdoorsy look to opt for down-to-earth colours including rich brown or Traditional, which pairs grey- ish purple, burgundy or midtone blue with curry tones. BrushUp SICO paint has found a way for Canadians to enjoy their favourite season all year from the comfort of their own home. "From wintery rich purple and slate, to spring-like nature-based midtones, and saturated summery lights, to autumnal reds, yellows and greens, the colours trending for 2017 are reflective of both the changing landscape and people's increased desire for change and empowerment in today's non-stop world," says Geneviève Paiement, brand manager. "Next year's colour palette is more complex than we've seen in the last few years. Energetic brights sit next to muted midtones; classic reds and blues bump into mixed blue-greens and green-yellows; and clean colours join greyed ones." Topping the list of the Sico paint brand's 2017 colours is purple, particularly shades of blue-grey violet – such as Mozart, the brand's Colour of the Year – that can be adapted to any room, gender and season. Describing the colour as rich and calming, Paiement says: "Providing a creative backdrop for self-expression, it blends nicely with a wide range of colours, such as neutrals and white, or onyx and greyed greens." Dulux Paints has found a way to help Canadians unleash their creativity and transform walls into one-of-a-kind masterpieces in two easy steps. "Dulux Venetian Silk paint is an original paint product that delivers luxurious, elegant walls unique to each room," says Martin Tustin-Fuchs, brand manager. "Developed using innovative technology that enables users to infuse walls with visual depth and sophistication to match their personal taste, Dulux Venetian Silk paint is part of a new line called Dulux Effect Finishes that also includes Dulux Liquid." He adds: "Dulux Venetian Silk paint produces the sensuous, silky, layered effect of Venetian plaster yet is easy to apply and smooth to the touch." Available in 40 striking, light-animating colours, Dulux Venetian Silk creates a distinctive multi-toned and luminous finish that adds unprecedented depth to walls. A coat of spe- cially-selected base colour is painted on before two thin top coats of Dulux Venetian Silk paint are applied creatively, in different directions, using an applicator or plastic trowel. "The result is an original work of art infused into the wall that brings an element of style and class to any room," says Tustin-Fuchs. Creating the next generation of interior paints, Sherwin-Williams is introducing enhanced formulas including Emerald Matte and Satin, ProMar 200 Zero VOC Flat, SuperPaint Flat and Eminence ceiling paint. "Our customers have come to expect the best from Sherwin-Williams, and our enhanced paint formulas continue to redefine 'best in class,'" says Steve Revnew, senior VP of product innovation. "We are committed to heavily investing in research and development, and to leading the coating industry with continuous product improvements and new technology breakthroughs." He explains the matte and satin finishes of Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex paint and primer in one are now formulated to provide improved stain resistance, even better washability and a smoother and even more attractive final appearance. Secondly, the flat sheen of ProMar 200 Zero VOC Interior Latex Paint has improved hide and uniformity, which helps reduce time on the job, while providing a better looking finish with good touch-up capabilities. "The new SuperPaint Flat Interior Acrylic Latex paint and primer in one fea- tures enhanced hide and application, meaning fewer coats and increased productivity." Also adding to the mix, the Eminence ceiling paint now has an antimicro- bial agent that inhibits the growth of mould and mil- dew on the paint surface.
