John Ruth, who is also president of the Bear-
ing Specialists Association (BSA), recently
presented the first-ever Annual BSA Excel-
lence Awards in Chicago, it didn't merely
signify a new awards ceremony. It also her-
alded more recognition for innovation with-
in the North American bearings industry.
Ruth told Communicator magazine, "New
products and technology help distributors
deliver more value to customers. They solve
problems, and we at the BSA decided it was
time to focus more on the manufacturing
side and draw attention to new industry
breakthroughs, via these awards."
The first Manufacturer Excellence Award
was presented to Baldor-Dodge for the Ultra
Kleen ball bearing, whose combination of
corrosion resistance and advanced sealing
makes it perfect for demanding food and
beverage applications.
The second award was presented to Schaef-
fler Group for the FAG SmartCheck, a hand-
sized system that enables decentralized,
permanent machine conditioning monitoring
(SmartCheck has its own internal network
browser that enables monitoring and diag-
nostics from anywhere in the world).
The third award, for outstanding service to
the end-use customer, was presented to The
Timken Company for the Timken Sheave
Pac bearing assembly, designed to eliminate
the need to re-grease the travelling block or
crown block on oil rigs (the assembly can run
an entire operating cycle between rebuilds
without the need for re-lubrication or addi-
tional maintenance).
