18 BCA A .COM SPRING 2017 Blue Star Donuts, Pip's Original, Voodoo Doughnuts, Donut Byte Labs, Coco Donuts, Teardrop Lounge 'O' MY! 5 MUST-TASTE PORTLAND DOUGHNUTS Portland is the doughnut capital of the Pacific Northwest, so you can't visit without allowing at least one sweet indulgence. Our picks: Blueberry Bourbon Basil, Blue Star Donuts. French brioche dough glazed with a to-die-for flavour combo. Blue Star's gourmet confections, dubbed "donuts for adults," are now served at 10 locations in Portland, Los Angeles and Tokyo (the newest at Portland International Airport). Dirty Wu Mini Doughnut, Pips Mobile Doughnuts and Chai Cinnamon sugar, raw honey, warm Nutella and a dusting of sea salt. Hunt down this food truck and savour made-to-order mini doughnuts with house-brewed chai tea. Grape Ape, Voodoo Doughnuts. Vanilla frosting, grape dust and lavender sprinkles. A Portland institution, Voodoo's original location at 22 SW 3rd Avenue is painted radioactive pink and perpetually lined up with tourists craving wild toppings like Cap'n Crunch cereal, bacon and bubblegum. Rose Petal Infused Sweet Cream, Donut Byte Labs. This food truck at 4th and Burnside creates rose- infused versions of its mini-doughnut flavours (milk and honey, strawberry shortcake and crème brûlée, to name a few) to celebrate the Portland Rose Festival in June. Chocolate Glazed Cake with Sprinkles, Coco Donuts. Cake-style dough with a rich chocolate topping. Coco's four locations serve classic doughnut flavours in yeast-raised, cake and jelly-filled varieties. Best enjoyed with the house coffee, roasted on site. –Kirsten Rodenhizer ULTRA-CRAFT COCKTAILS Portland's bars and speakeasies have long been at the forefront of the craft cocktail movement, and now they're going further to customize their tipples. Like Teardrop Lounge with its housemade bitters, and Clyde Common with barrel-aged cocktails – classics such as Negronis, prepared in batches and "oaked" in bourbon barrels for two months. At the Expatriate lounge, share your choice of spirit, with a one-word descriptor like "wild," and the bartender will invent a personalized cocktail on the spot. ARTISANAL TEA Portland is known for its alternative coffee scene, thanks largely to Stumptown Coffee, but it's a tea mecca, too. This is where Stash and Tazo teas started, the founder of which went on to create Steven Smith Teamaker, a Portland teaworks with two tasting rooms, where guests can shop, sip or sample a flight. Townshend's Tea Company is riding the fermented wave of kombucha under its Brew Dr. label and also distilling tea into spirits at its Thomas & Sons Distillery. A creative libation from Teardrop Lounge, where ingredients such as bitters and mixes are handmade on site.
