FEBRUA RY 2017 | 67 RENDERING COURTESY N45 ARCHITECTURE INC. Carpenters' Union Training Centre the architects in order to complement the different finishes of the building. "A number of the training facility's specialty spaces have been designed with unique architectural features," states Guy-Olivier Mauzeroll, lead electrical engineer on the project from R. J. McKee Engineering Ltd. "Light fixtures were selected to complement these features, to meet UBCJA's operational requirements and to comply with the relevant codes and standards." Mauzeroll's colleague, Scott Cooper, is the project's lead mechanical engineer and adds that they also needed to ensure that mechanical services were adequately concealed and consistent with the intent of the final finish. Playing a key role in the construction industry, UBCJA of course know how important it is to pay attention to the installation details. "Based on their feedback, additional details were inserted on the electrical drawings to ensure that the installing contractor understood the design intent in each space," notes Mauzeroll. Meanwhile the multi-purpose nature of the facility requires that each area be considered separately in order to meet the varying thermal comfort requirements for each unique space. "To achieve this requirement, multiple heating and cooling systems are being installed as well as a full building automation system," describes Cooper. "The mechanical system allows for flexible scheduling and temperature control to suit each space." Head on outside and this careful attention to detail flows through into the landscape design. The existing soil conditions on the site presented a design challenge where larger trees could not be planted close to the building. Therefore the landscape starts with a low and intricate scale at the building, becoming larger and more natural further from the building footprint. "The exterior landscape components include the use of native plant material where feasible, the use of natural stone, precast pavers, concrete and wood elements to complement the building design," says Marietta Ruhland, the lead landscape architect at Ruhland & Associates Ltd. who worked closely with N45 Architecture Inc. "The use of innovative wood screening at patio areas, with sinuous lines and strong verticals showcase the use of wood in an exterior setting. The landscape design at the building foundation brings together naturalized plantings and rockery that sets the stage for the building architecture. Use of decorative boulders, both for esthetics and security, tie in the plantings and peastone." With construction booming in the Ottawa region, skilled workers will be in high demand. "Statistics indicate we will suffer a shortage of workers in the trades over the next decade," notes Thompson. "Training people locally creates and supports opportunities for prosperity and long-term employment, and UBCJA is dedicated to ensuring our workers remain on the cutting edge by providing the highest level of training available." "We look forward to the placement of not only skilled tradesmen in the various scopes of their expertise, but tradesmen that are prepared to work safely in our ever-changing construction industry," says Marty Smith, VP and general manager, M.
