54 | FEBRUA RY 2017 Banff Gondola Upper Terminal Redevelopment new building. It has a new roof and extended re-clad walls. This also meant the gondola could remain open to the public throughout much of the construction," says Kitchen. From the gondola hall, head on inside the building through the double doors and you find yourself on the first floor that features a coffee shop and gift shop. Up on the second floor, via the stairwell or elevator, and you enter the new interpretive centre which was designed by Dialog and U.S. company Global Experience Specialists (GES). It is here you find a 45-seat theatre that offers guests a bird's-eye view experience. Up on the third floor is the 140- seat restaurant Sky Bistro, and up on the fourth floor is the Canadian Citizenship Pavilion and the 1,000-square-foot rooftop deck. For this project sustainability was top of mind for Brewster Travel Canada and Dialog. "Even though we are not going through LEED certification, this is a highly sustainable project with a high-quality envelope. Features include stormwater retention and low-flow fixtures as well as solar panels on the roof for solar hot water heating," says Souleles. For the electrical design, Mulvey + Banani International (Alberta) Inc. provided lighting control design assistance and installed an energy efficient low glare illumination system. While there are so many impressive aspects to this project (including having to move more than 312 tons of concrete, 149 tons of steel and 79 tons of debris down the mountain to be recycled and reused), it is the pride that each crew member feels to have been a part of something so significant. "Everybody realized we were dealing with something special," says Berci, to which Kitchen adds, "This is one of those projects that will be in my top three because it was so unique." And the team hails Kitchen's logistical prowess for such a smooth running project. "We faced some world class challenges and Kitchen really did a fantastic job of keeping everything moving and making sure Parks Canada was happy," says Lewis. "Kitchen was quite brilliant at being able to execute this on a very tight level," adds Souleles. And as for the owners, they couldn't be more happy with their new building. "Creating a world-class facility on the top of a mountain took incredible teamwork, innovation and superior environmental stewardship, and we couldn't be more proud," says Dave McKenna, president of Brewster Travel Canada.
