44 | DECEMBER 2016 Carpet T The carpet industry stays one step ahead with inspiring styles and versatile fabrics by LAURIE JONES Technology mixed with fashion is setting the tone for carpet choices. Barber-pole yarn twisted fibres and the ever popular shag styles are giving consumers an opportunity to create looks that range from classic luxury to retro chic. Aqua Hospitality Carpets, a division of Beaulieu Canada, once again transcends creative limits with its highly anticipated new collection Dolce. Compelling and graceful, Dolce is a masterful play of contrasting elements where the softness of lace flirts with the raw force of stone. This Italian infused collection will seduce with its textural effects and tranquil blend of elements. Unique in Canada, Beaulieu uses cutting-edge Dye Injected Design (DID) technology to create its bold and innovative designs. "Beaulieu's designers are considered visionaries in the industry – always surpassing trends, creating it, inspiring it, and always one step ahead," says Christie Clunan, design and marketing director. Taking the DID technolog y one step further, Beaulieu Canada also launched Strategy modular car- pet tiles at IIDEXCanada 2016. "The Strategy collection focuses on great unique design for today's corporate workplace," says Clunan. "It features the revolution- ary, award-winning backing system Nexterra, which has the highest post-consumer content in the industry, is fully recyclable and offers outstanding warranties. Furthermore, all DID products are proudly designed and fabricated in Canada." The Extraordinary collection from Shaw Contract Group is treating consumers with a reconnec- tion to the sensory, creating a tactile atmosphere to enhance the senses. The new plank size of 12-inches by 48-inches adds scale and dimension to the floor as three designs can combine or be used alone to gen- erate varying degrees of texture. Options include Primitive: a modern shag that injects bold, exaggerated Tread Softly tactility; Resurface: which provides consistent tex- tured esthetic; and Foundation: a transition from Primitive to the still flatness. "The collection is largely inspired by process and pushing current technologies to new heights," says Reesie Duncan, VP, design. "Using Tapistron machinery, stray ends of yarn are typically left on the carpet face after tuft- ing. Usually, we take this excess material and shear it, but here, we use it as a styled feature. By rethinking technol- ogy and modifying the process, this element was exag- gerated to inject bold and dramatic texture." Duncan adds, "Pattern is implied through varied tex- ture and a natural, tonal palette to enhance the relief. Hinting at raised foliage and Nordic landscapes to create moments of respite, we explore the emotions texture can influence – highlighting the user experience underfoot." Duncan says at Shaw Contract Group they believe everything matters. "Constructed with EcoWorx back- ing and Eco Solution Q nylon, the products in this col- lection are Cradle to Cradle Silver and assessed for impact on health and the environment." EcoWorx prod- ucts are recyclable, contribute to LEED and backed by Environmental Guarantee. In 2016, Tarkett introduced two new Tandus Centiva selections: Velocity and LightSpeed carpets. Designed by Jhane Barnes, these products offer a new approach to the ancient printing and weaving tech- nique, ikat. The ikat resist dyeing process uses skeins of yarn that are tightly wrapped to resist dye, creating a distinctive look when the yarn is woven. "Neutral colour lines were developed to make the metallic yarn pop," says Teiya Eubanks, Tarkett's con- tent marketing manager. "The texture of the design is created by tipshearing the highest pile, allowing a stunning pattern to emerge. The cut ends of the spe- cialty yarn are drastically darker than the side loop, creating the high contrast that defines the pattern." Velocity is comprised of a single, composite Dynex yarn that starts with a small fibre bundle, less than half the size of typical carpet yarn. The cross section provides a very high luster when viewing the side and reads very dark, almost black, on the cut ends where it is tipsheared. LightSpeed uses the same unique yarn with three additional yarn colours to accent the undulating move- ment. It isn't tipsheared, making it more durable for high-traffic areas. Both Velocity and LightSpeed are available in nine-inch by 36-inch, and 18-inch by 36-inch modular tiles. World Woven Collection from Interface Canada Inc.
