She marvels at the hundreds of thousands of lives that began at this hospital, including many of her own family and friends. One particular birth story, however, led to her enhanced appreciation of its exceptional care for women across the province. "A year ago on Christmas Day I had an emergency c-section to quickly deliver my …rst child, who is now a healthy—and very busy—baby," says Greening. "Becoming a mom changed everything, and I was in awe of the team who brought usˆsafely through a very frightening, life-threatening circumstance." Beyond obstetrics, Greening has developed admiration for the myriad of world-class programs o‰ered out of BC Women's. Her background includes roles with Lower Mainland hospital foundations, COO of an American social justice accelerator and executive director of a non-pro…t in the Downtown Eastside. Her social justice roots and work with marginalized communities are well aligned with the hospital's programs for HIV/AIDS care, addictions and indigenous women. "Everything has just clicked. I am now in the honourable position of facilitating conversations to change the tide on women's health," says Greening. "Motherhood provided me with an unanticipated clarity of spirit. I see endless possibilities for women, working collaboratively for better health outcomes for ourselves and our children." HEALTHY WOMEN. HEALTHY BABIES. HEALTHY FAMILIES. BC Women's Hospital Foundation focuses on the health of women and their babies as the driving spirit behind its fundraising initiatives. It manages several streams of giving that include special, targeted campaigns along with those supporting ongoing equipment needs and capital projects. INNOVATIVE RESEARCH Funding life-changing research is a growing area of focus for the Foundation. World-renowned researchers housed at BC Women's are leading an e‰ort to end cervical cancer through use of the HPV vaccine and early detection.ˆThe HPV virus is responsible for cervical cancer and many other conditions, including cancers in men. BC Women's Hospital Foundation and the Women's Health Research Institute are partnered with VGH/UBC Hospital Foundation, BC Cancer Foundation and UBC Faculty of Medicine to fund this and other research to end all —ynecological cancers— saving hundreds of thousands of lives. IMPRESSIVE RESULTS Hope Starts Here is the Foundation's campaign to fund the most advanced equipment for the hospital's Newborn Intensive Care Unit ( NICU). Each year, 1,400 infants born in B.C. require the highest level of life-saving care from BC Women's specialists. The Foundation has proudly raised $15 million towards equipping the NICU and high-risk Labour and Delivery Units, which move in October to their incredible, purpose-built spaces within the campus's new Teck Acute Care Centre. The amazing wonder of the daily care provided at BC Women's is not lost on Greening, even a year after her baby's dramatic entrance to the world. "This place is precious—an organization that lauds and celebrates motherhood. This is the opportunity I didn't know I was waiting for. Christmas gave me both my beautiful son and a renewed purpose to work for the health and well-being of B.C.'s women and their babies."
