AUGUST 2016 | 37 Bathtubs & Showers Bathtubs and showers deliver a spa-like luxury to the home by LAURIE JONES C ustomization, individualization, one-of-a-kind – no matter how you label it, giving customers exactly the type of luxury home spa they want or need for their lifestyle is still a major direction for bath and shower manufacturers. "Now more than ever, the bathroom is becoming a sanctuary in the home, extending the purpose further than that of the historical water closet," says Michael Del Guidice, marketing director, LIXIL Water Technology Canada, American Standard Brands. "Whether we use the bathroom to wake up and start the day or as an escape to enjoy some much needed R&R, thoughtful design, esthetic and a feeling of spa-like luxury are key factors in the renovation and decoration of this much used space." Del Guidice notes that one prominent trend is the artistic emphasis put on free- standing tubs. "Rather than affixing a tub to a wall in the corner of the room, free- standing tubs are taking precedence in larger bathroom spaces; creating a focal point in the room, when space allows." American Standard offers three freestanding tub options, all of which contribute to the lasting luxury of the home spa retreat: Loft – crisp clean lines with a strong rectangular shape emphasize the grandeur of the Loft tub; Serin – sleek shape and attractive symmetry create the perfect centrepiece; and Ovale – a large bathing well that generates a feeling of warmth and luxury. BainUltra is pleased to bring big style and luxury into small spaces with the addi- tion of smartly redesigned air jet tubs in two of its most popular therapeutic bath collections – Evanescence and Charism. "Both tubs perfectly capture the impecca- ble quality and focus on wellness and relaxation that are signatures of the BainUltra brand, and both offer the distinctive style and exceptional comfort their collections are known for," says Julie Metras, development project manager. Sized to be just right for a single bather, these tubs are perfect for compact bathrooms where floor space is precious and value is prized. Measuring 59-inches by 36-inches by 28-inches, the Evanescence 5936 is a beau- tifully sculpted freestanding tub that makes an elegant focal point for any bath- room. "This tub's flowing lines and roomy interior allow for full body immersion, while a gently sloped backrest supports the head and nape of the neck with uniform heat along the spine," says Metras. "The Charism 5736 gives a modern twist to free- standing design with a sleek silhouette and a distinctive, handcrafted band of colour that outlines the exterior of the tub." Robinson Lighting & Bath Centre carries a variety of bathtub and shower options, with tubs, like WETSTYLE's new Tulip Freestanding Bathtub. "This tub not only cre- ates a beautiful and interesting focal point in the room, it also helps make you feel as though you're heading for a destination where you can do nothing but relax," says Mya Horley, retail marketing co-ordinator. "The Tulip's gently sloping sides mimic the petals of a tulip and create a relaxing oasis that is shaped perfectly for the body. The Tulip is the quintessential piece suited for any bathroom, be it a minimalist modern or classic-inspired, rustic design." Horley says freestanding tubs can be placed anywhere in a room. "Position one in front of a bay window for the view, or centre one in the middle of a large space to make a statement that you're putting yourself and your time there first. Tub fillers can be mounted nearly anywhere as well, whether from the floor or the wall. A free- standing tub has no deck or surround to blend it in with the rest of the bathroom, which is part of its appeal." GROHE SmartControl offers 3D showering: Drücken, Drehen, Duschen – the German expressions for push, turn, shower. The innovative push button technol- ogy means that personalizing the shower experience has never been easier. "This all-in-one solution does not only impress with its innovative technology, but its organic design also makes a stylish statement in the bathroom and sets the tone for a relaxed shower experience," says Maria Bosco, director, marketing and train- ing, GROHE Canada. GROHE SmartControl uses a very straightforward and easily understood double button design that can control and memorize all desired shower settings. A com- bined push-and-turn button starts the flow of water and controls its flow volume. "Its knurled surface means that the button can easily be turned even with wet fin- gers," says Bosco. "To stop the flow of water, the user simply pushes the button again; the chosen flow rate setting remains memorized for the next time." Switching between the head and hand shower is just as simple by pushing the respective button. All controls are marked with self-explanatory symbols for intui- tive operation, making this innovative shower system a joy to use. At KOHLER, the designers continue to provide customers with the tools they need to build their ideal spa-at-home experience. Customization is definitely a big factor, as tranquility looks different to everyone. "For some, a deep, standalone soaker tub may be the pinnacle of relaxation," says Donna Church, marketing and communi- cations manager. "Other customers may dream of a fully immersive shower expe- rience, complete with multiple heads, sprays and even steam. The new KOHLER Invigoration Series steam generators would provide the perfect solution for them."
