+ Kolor Gard architectural coatings from Durabond. AUGUST 2016 | 21 Tiles for the cladding will be 40 by 12 inches. "It's a precast wall system, not a rear-ventilated facade. An advantage is that developers and contractors are very familiar with precast systems and processes. It's a new look on familiar technology," Rogers says. Of course, not all the challenging areas are visible. The envelope, with its multiple layers, can conceal issues and missteps from view. Andrew Cole, executive director for the Canadian Urethane Foam Contractors Association Inc. (CUFCA), makes the point that an envelope insulated with spray foam does not need a membrane air/moisture barrier. "The foam is the bar- rier. But foam is being installed over a membrane. This relates to product knowledge at the design stage. It adds to the cost unnecessarily and it's happening more than it should," he says. Cole notes, however, that CUFCA recommends use of a transition membrane – "but a full one is redundant, especially when everyone is being squeezed on price." Instructions can help. Carlisle Construction Materials, which manufactures and supplies roofing, waterproofing and insulation products, including poly- isocyanurate insulation and block-moulded expanded polystyrene (EPS), and also supplies mineral-based products like ROXUL, provides a set of instructions on tying together the waterproofing layers for roof and wall at the intersections. "They can be overlooked. The detail suite we provide explains how to tie in the roof and wall membranes together," says Robert Reale, man- ager for marketing communication at Carlisle. Recent advances are helping manufacturers and sup- pliers meet the demand for an ever-widening range of colours, coatings and finishes that are durable and don't fade. Durabond, a manufacturer and supplier of EIFS and other envelope products, incorporates proprietary Durex fade-resistant pigmentation technology in the compa- ny's Kolor Gard architectural coatings. "It's designed to greatly reduce fading in deep-tone colours," says Anthony Rapone, marketing specialist at Durabond. A Building Envelope PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY DURABOND PRODUCTS LTD.
