J UNE 2016 | 55 These stone products are a great alternative to using more expensive quar- ried stone or a lower performing, concrete-based manufactured stone, and Marta Zonneveld, Arriscraft's marketing manager, points out that they "Don't shrink or fade, and look the same 20 years down the road, plus they have through-body colour consistency, meaning builders can cut and shape them as design dictates." As for business in 2016, Zonneveld remarks, "All product groups are moving well, and we see a particular interest in our Thin-Clad products. Our thin ARRIS-clip is part of the Renaissance line, and architects can incorporate this with the full-bed Renaissance and achieve total visual consistency." Zonneveld is referring to a unique cladding system whereby thin ARRIS.clip units are simply clipped to a substrate using the Gridworx pre-engineered channel system, which offers tremendous con- struction scheduling flexibility. Arriscraft has also seen a continual rise in interest for its ARRIS.stack thin stone veneer product that installs with adhesive, like tile. Sometimes the focus on creating new products in the masonry realm comes at the expense of close communication with customers and understanding what they really want. This hazard is something Expocrete has recognized and scrupulously avoids, with the outcome that today it values itself as much a creative problem solver as a provider of quality products. With its design, manufacture and inventory of paving and stack stones, walk- way slabs, yardscapes, landscape/retaining walls and garden walls, Expocrete is devoted to helping turn its customers' visions into reality. Driving its success in this regard is the simple fact that its staff love problem solving and undertake design challenges as if they were their own (it almost goes without saying that this enthu- siasm is informed by extensive industry experience and training). As an Oldcastle company, Expocrete's product inventory helps ensure that design and construction problems are solved, no matter the complexities. Oldcastle is well- respected for continually developing solutions that give architects the performance and esthetic benefits they demand and contractors ease and efficiency on the job site, and InsulTech, a complete Insulated Concrete Masonry Unit (ICMU) system, is a good case in point: comprised of a pre-assembled structural masonry unit, moulded expanded polystyrene insulation insert and thin veneer face, this system is installed as a complete assembly and is fully thermally broken, providing superior energy efficiency, wind-load resistance and fire integrity. In a similar vein, the EnduraMax manufactured stone veneer wall system from Oldcastle and available through Expocrete does a superb job of doing away with the weaknesses of manufactured-stone veneer installations, many of which fail due to solar-vapour problems that deteriorate OSB sheathing. EnduraMax, which incorporates a layer of R-9 expanded polystyrene foam, accommodates several styles of veneer; the wall units include recessed pockets designed to accept these thin veneers, and once they are snapped into place, the wall is ready for grout. Dryvit is a rare example of a company that has become indelibly associated for having provided a revolutionary product to the design and construction sectors, and it did so in 1969 when it combined continuous insulation and design-flexible esthetics into a single exterior wall system called Outsulation. Outsulation has become a trusted choice for architects and builders, saving time and money because less structural materials are used and the product is easier to transport. Outsulation provides design flexibility due to its relative light weight, and the system is perfect for large building projects that must be constructed under tight deadlines. Plus, outstanding energy efficiency is achieved due to the continuous insu- lation and air barrier of the system: exterior continuous insulation wraps buildings, as opposed to traditional cavitybatt insulation that is installed between the studs. All Dryvit Outsulation systems include adhesive, rigid insulation, glass fibre mesh embedded in base coat, and finish, which are installed sequentially by trained professional contractors. So effective are Dryvit solutions that the com- pany recently announced that when its new High Durability Continuous Insulation program is implemented on an entire building exterior, it will provide a 20-year impact resistance warranty. If the lamina is punctured due to normal wear during that time frame, Dryvit will pay to have the damage repaired. In assessing 2016, Bill McEwen points to the enthusiastic response from mem- bers to the cladding and details components on the Masonry Institute website as one of many indications that activity in his sector is brisk. "We're also in the midst of significantly updating our technical manual for a summer rollout," he says. "There's a lot going on in masonry, and it's our distinct privilege to support the industry every way we can."
