12 SUmmEr 2016 Over the past 50 years, SFU has fostered an environment that embraces innovation, change and diversity. The "radical campus" sobriquet still fits, but its meaning has evolved. In the 1960s, SFU was a budding university breaking away from conven- tion. It was both a hotbed of radicalism and fertile ground where ideas could take root. Today, the word "radical" is more about evolu- tion than revolution, about collaboration rather than confrontation. And about clever educational strategies for keeping abreast of change as technol- ogy redefines our future—over and over again. When computing science innovations ushered in big data—massively complex reams of informa- tion—SFU embraced this new scientific play- ground, launching a master's program to develop future scientists in this field. World issues around climate change and environ- mental sustainability led to a new Faculty of Envi- ronment, whose groundbreaking programs include one of Canada's first bachelor's programs to focus on environmental challenges and solutions, and a unique joint master's degree in ecological restoration. Nor does SFU let research theories and findings drift around in a blue-sky world. Student business incubator SFU Venture Connection® and social innovation lab RADIUS (Radical Ideas Useful to Society) ensure students and researchers learn how to apply their research results, improving the quality of life for seniors, cancer survivors and pain sufferers, and driving new ideas for improving our world. From Revolution to Evolution With every challenge, SFU sees an opportunity. Who knows what the future holds? A cure for cancer? Eradication of bedbugs? A sustainable solution for species at risk? One thing is for sure, nous sommes prêts—we are ready SUSTAINABILITY SCHOOL SFU launches a bachelor of environment, one of the first programs of its kind to focus on identifying environmental challenges and finding sustainable solutions. The interdisciplinary program combines humanistic, socio-economic and scientific approaches that give tomorrow's environmental leaders a founda- tion of knowledge and skills in areas ranging from earth systems and ecology to the human role in nature and governance. HEALTH TECH HUB Innovation Boulevard is a one-square-mile health network in Surrey City Centre where more than 180 health services companies and 45 health technology com- panies are located. Labs scattered within the area's hospitals and care homes are embedded with SFU health researchers, including professors Ryan D'Arcy and Carolyn Sparrey. This visionary partnership between the University, the City of Surrey and Fraser Health focuses on accelerating the development of health technologies that have a practical application in people's lives, whether it's analy- sis of skin cancer or support for spinal injuries. ABORIGINALS IN FOCUS SFU's 33-month part- time executive MBA in Aboriginal business and leadership cel- ebrates its first grads, including Ian Campbell, hereditary chief of the Squamish Nation (turn to page 36 for a profile of Campbell). The groundbreak- ing program teaches formal business skills, while also recognizing and addressing how to incorporate traditional Aboriginal protocols and knowledge. 2015 – Future the first programs of its kind to focus on identifying solutions. Johnson's cutting-edge work in health sci- ences and gender has earned international acclaim and her dedication to this field has helped garner millions of dollars in research funding. A recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012, Johnson continues to engage the world with her research and leadership through initiatives such as SFU Innovates, an integrated action plan that supports students, faculty and community partners in sharing talent, technology and transformative ideas.
