PressurePlus one-step natural wood treatment from Sansin. A PR IL 2016 | 55 PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY THE SANSIN CORPORATION Paint & Coatings environmentally-friendly, waterborne interior and exterior wood products. "Our technologies deliver outstanding colour, durability and performance without the toxicity found in conventional stains," says Sjoerd Bos, VP. "Sansin Enviro Stains use water, not petroleum solvents, to deeply penetrate and protect wood naturally, from within." Two of Sansin's newest products are PressurePlus, a new one-step natural wood treatment for pressure-treated lumber (new and existing) and Firestop 99, a clear like fire retardant wood finish that meets Class A requirements for interior wood surfaces. FireStop 99 also provides attractive benefits in addition to fire safety. The Coast Paint Group, B.C. distributor for Sansin products, offers a variety of options for both indoor and outdoor staining. "We have a new product coming in June called Resolution that is a very low-VOC stain," says Gary Brown, manager. "It is a vegetable oil-based product rather than petroleum. This is a premium two-part marine system that can be used for both interior and exterior applications. It is also the best in class system for marine bright work and decks." Brown says Resolution is available in a wide variety of colours. "Currently there is a pre-mixed palette but eventually there is going to be a tint system so we can make any colour combination. Because it goes a long way during the application process, it is great on floors and because it is non-film building, it is good for high traffic areas." The Sansin SDF exterior product provides tough, effective protection for wood siding and the DNS selection, a long-lasting film building product, is available from translucent to solid hide finishes. Thanks to SDF's unique waterborne technology, it can provide complete protection in just one coat. Brown notes that the Coast Paint Group also has a line of Sansin zero-VOC inte- rior stains that enhance and show the richness of interior wood projects. "It comes in an array of standard colours, or custom formulas that can be top coated with the Purity interior finishes. It is available in a range of finishes from flat to gloss," he says. Cloverdale Paint is another company that looks at the bigger picture. When it comes to choosing a colour, they recommend considering a lighter colour that will stand the test of time and lessen your impact on the environment. Performance duty cycle has a direct bearing on true environmental friendli- ness. Poor quality paint, with a reduced performance duty cycle, is more damag- ing to the environment than high-quality paint, as the area requires more frequent re-painting. In addition, the use of high loads of universal colourant often lowers the durability of the applied coating. Using lighter colours provides greater paint coating durability as there will be little change in the specified sheen/gloss level. "Greater durability means longer duty cycle," says Vince Smith, architectural repre- sentative for Cloverdale Paint Inc. "Performance demanded from the research and development facility at Cloverdale Paint assures high quality, long duty cycle from our entire product line." Smith adds that another benefit of choosing a light colour is that it helps maximize the efficiency of your room's lighting, while minimizing your energy costs. Also, often the deeper the colour the more VOCs may be added. "Fortunately, Cloverdale Paint employs the use of Zero VOC colourants to tint the entire Architectural Paint line, which eliminates any concerns of having higher VOC containing paint for the darker colours," says Smith. "In summary, using lighter colours often reduces light- ing costs and minimizes any additional VOCs contributed." A
