Karson Kartage, Stittsville, ON. + Mike's Bike Shop, Dieppe, NB. A PR IL 2016 | 47 PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY ROBERTSON BUILDING SYSTEMS Steel Building Systems American Buildings Company also details all buildings in BIM 3D as a stan- dard practice, at no additional cost. "Providing customers with a modelling system that can display an exact replica of their building leads to confidence and peace of mind for the lifecycle of the project," says Brooker. "Because American Buildings Company controls the entire building shell, BIM modelling is simple, fast and easy." He adds that the building owner also gets a digital copy of the completed project model; since 85 per cent of a building's costs over 30 years is in maintenance and operation, having a digital copy that includes all information relating to the struc- ture simplifies ongoing maintenance. While it promotes steel as a green building advantage and ensures that its struc- tures contain between 25 and 60 per cent recycled steel by weight, Robertson Building Systems also emphasizes that it can help reduce energy consumption and lower operating costs via the use of a thermal system that consists of blanket insu- lation sandwiched between two steel panels. Robertson's versatility in accommodating diverse client needs is evident in two recent projects: for Karson Kartage, whose owners wanted a new equipment main- tenance facility in Stittsville, Ontario, Argue Construction (an authorized Robertson builder) provided a 28,500-square-foot structural steel facility with an additional 2,000 square feet of office area constructed of conventional structural steel. One section of this structure features five overhead doors and a 30-foot, self-contained wash bay. Robertson also provided structural capacity to allow for the attachment of seven-foot-high precast wrap-around exterior panels. By contrast, Acadian Construction Ltd. created a 9,570-square-foot Robertson engineered steel building for Mike's Bike Shop in Dieppe, New Brunswick featur- ing a retail storefront, repair shop, delivery area, storage facility and office space. Fresh and contemporary were the esthetic requirements, and accordingly the exte- rior walls of the structure are clad in 26-gauge PBC panels in a combination of ver- tically-applied snow white, with coal black and Galvalume applied horizontally; the roof is made of 24-gauge Double-Lok standing seam in Galvalume Plus, and a bright green canopy caps the entrance.
