84 | FEBRUA RY 2016 Westhills YMCA/YWCA Langford Aquatic Centre developed a strong reputation for achieving quality construction in the large multi-residential realm. This, combined with the consultancy experience of Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd., AME Consulting Group and AES Engineering Ltd., was instrumental in rendering the construction process relatively uneventful. Klippenstein notes the project manager, Durwest Construction Management Inc., also contributed significantly to the success of the project. "We've worked on many pools with AME, AES and many times with RJC, and with Durwest watching over everything we were a super-tight team," he says. Verity project manager Gabe Forrester is pleased with how smoothly the YMCA/ YWCA Langford Aquatic Centre took shape. "We broke ground 18 months ago and there were all sorts of logistical challenges – such as gaining access to the ceiling areas of the 18,000-square-foot lap pool, for example. There was very limited space for lifts, but on one occasion we had various tradesmen on lifts accessing the ceiling," he says. Further complications included components such as movable floors for the hydrotherapy pools, in order to provide wheelchair access. A 53-foot-tall concrete wall along with the lazy river, swirl pool, leisure pool and lap pool required precise concrete formwork as well. Forrester agrees that the overused term "team effort" truly applies to this project. "The main trades – mechanical, civil, electrical and pool forming specialists – were working shoulder to shoulder in the same areas, which we, with our multi-unit residential housing background had never encountered before," he says. "Forming the leisure pools and the structural steel work surrounding them was in itself a major task and required careful co-ordination of services, and clear communication between all parties." The YMCA/YWCA Langford Aquatic Centre will be finished in February but won't open until April, and Greater Victoria YMCA/YWCA CEO Jennie Edgecombe explains that the delay is so that everything from gym equipment to clocks can be installed. "It's been a really great partnership," she told reporters during a recent tour of the facility. "The waterslides are up now and the pool is looking great." To which Langford mayor Stew Young added, "This is the number one thing in Langford that residents are talking about. I think it's the best use of space I've seen."
