FEBRUA RY 2016 | 65 Humber River Hospital length of the hospital, encapsulates all of the clinics and offers users a sense of the building's scale. The concourse provides generous public circulation space along the east and west and the Allee, modelled as a main street, connects the north and south entrances of the hospital and features a retail pharmacy, foundation offices, the main public elevators and other retail. "With these two strong elements, you can navigate the length and breadth of the space with relative ease and not get lost," says Fisher, adding that his firm developed an efficient layout that enabled staff to cut down the time it takes to move from patient to patient – and even department to department. A striking design feature of the hospitals' exterior is the massive art installation that appears on the north and south facades. Integrated into the curtain wall system, the piece is entitled "Aspen Grove" and depicts a colourful woodland scene. "From the outset, we wanted something striking for the envelope treatment," says Fisher, explaining that Aspens share a common root system and that the piece speaks to the diversity and commonality for the community the hospital serves. There are a number of community spaces throughout the building as well as outside. Users following the Allee to its south end on the lower level will come to a food court. Outside, adjacent to this retail space, is a large plaza. Finished with modular pavers and curvilinear seating as well as chairs and tables, the outdoor space's main feature is a shade structure with steel supports and wood trellis work. "A major feature of the landscape was to have this outdoor gathering space that also functions as a community space," says John Quinn, the project's landscape consultant and a principal at Quinn Design Associates. It's the main outdoor place but there are four other important elements including, a north entrance plaza, a dialysis arrival court, the emergency arrival space on the east side as well as a major landscape garden treatment along the portal of care roadway on the south side. Quinn's work also included the green roof elements, which together total 140,000 square feet, making it the largest green roof installation in Ontario (and the second largest in Canada after the Vancouver Convention Centre). "It's one of the largest landscape projects related to health care to date in Ontario," Quinn says. The project's size and urgent 44-month construction, managed with expert efficiency by PCL Constructors Canada, served as significant challenges for all parties and required interesting structural engineering solutions. Given the building's architectural plan and construction scheduling, it made sense to use a system of temporary movement joints instead of permanent expansion joints, explains Kathryn Edwards of WSP Group, the DBFM team's structural consultant. These temporary joints were composed of a ledge system where one PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAN SCHWALM/COURTESY HDR ARCHITECTS INC. 12:24 PM Trimen Food Service.indd 1 16-01-12 2:51 Congratulations to the Owners and the Team that built the Humber River Hospital Trend Foodservice Design.indd 1 16-01-21 11:44 STREETSCAPING, CONCRETE & UNIT PAVING FOR THE HUMBER RIVER HOSPITAL CONSTRUCTION LTD.
