FEBRUA RY 2016 | 33 Appliances F Appliances help modern living become more compact by LAURIE JONES From European imports to state-of-the-art local prod- ucts, appliance manufacturers and suppliers have stepped up their game to provide top-of-the-line units with new technology to make the chore of cooking and cleaning a snap. One stand-out item for 2016 is Miele's pro-style 48-inch range. "For many years, Miele has had a very slick, premium quality brand of primarily built-in appliances – wall ovens, cooktops and dishwashers," says Julie Hale, manager, Edmonds Fine Appliances. "At the end of 2015, Miele introduced a series of profes- sional style ranges that were specifically designed for the North American marketplace. It's an exciting piece because for the longest time, ranges have been a bulky, chunky piece of equipment and Miele has made it such a refined and beautiful model." Hale says Miele has combined the best pieces from their built-in products into a freestanding range. "On their 48-inch models, you have the option for eight burners, six burners and a griddle, or six burners and a barbecue, and the freestanding unit is shallower in depth. This is the same as other manufacturers, but the Miele model is designed with the oven on the right, and on the left, a speed oven and warming drawer are built in to the range. An added bonus is that all of the Miele pro-style ranges are self-cleaning." The handle is ergonomic and spins when users open the oven. "This means your wrist doesn't have to move as the oven door drops down," Hale adds. The Dacor appliances team knows the modern home chef values the precision and convenience that connected kitchen appliances provide. "Our latest in smart home technology for the kitchen is the Discovery iQ 48-inch Dual-Fuel Range; a voice activated, remote-capable ultra- premium range," says Chuck Huebner, president and CEO. "There has been an overwhelming response to its smart kitchen technology, meeting the contemporary and qual- ity-driven needs of the passionate home chef." As many homeowners look for ways to show their originality and style, Dacor leads the trend of person- alization in the kitchen with the DacorMatch Color System. "DacorMatch allows users to select any colour, either from colour options hand-selected by the Dacor design team or from a colour sample," he says. "The pre- mium oven or range will be personalized to order. In today's contemporary kitchen, a reflection of individu- ality reigns and when kitchen design combines smart technology with culinary artistry, homeowners can be sure they won't be matched in style or sophistication." Another unique product comes from Euro-Line Appliances – a full kitchen in only six feet. "The Kompakt kitchen is the ideal solution for tight spaces or secondary kitchens," says Doug Eglington, presi- dent. "It marries small footprints, efficient perfor- mance, innovative design and green manufacturing for the perfect blend of European appliances." Space Program The kitchen features a stainless steel four-place setting dishwasher that can be integrated, sink and faucet, two-zone induction cooktop, integrated glide- out range hood, speed oven with both microwave and convection oven functions, and an integrated fridge/ freezer. "Many different cabinet and quartz counter- top finishes are available to ensure that the Kompakt kitchen fits the buyer's personal style," says Eglington. Of the many options from Midnorthern Appliance, LG offers one of the most unique units. "LG has just introduced a new washer and dryer that can be placed on pedestals to raise them up," says Michael Gnat, regional manager. "But the catch on this product is it offers a pedestal that is also an extra washing machine. Instead of just being a place to put detergent and lost socks, you open it up and there's a real, functioning washing machine that is primarily used for smaller loads. If you want, you can actually take it and put it in your bedroom or your den – wherever there is a place to connect water pipes." Gnat says the team does a huge amount of work for builders and supply condo projects in Vancouver, Montréal, Toronto and Ottawa. "It's all built-in cook- tops, ovens and fully integrated refrigeration. Spaces aren't getting any bigger and the cost of construction isn't getting any lower, so these options work well." Fisher & Paykel offer a dishwasher option that works for large dinner parties or cooking for two. "Since 1997, the DishDrawer dishwasher has put us on the map," says Scott Davies, brand marketing manager. "We offer single and double DishDrawers. The double DishDrawer fits in the same space as a traditional unit, but it is effectively two separate dishwashers. If you're having a dinner party, you can put your pots and pans in one dish drawer on a heavy cycle then put your dish- ware and long stemmed wine glasses in the top drawer on a delicate cycle. The single drawer takes up half the space, so underneath you could put another cabinet for cutlery or plates so it's great for compact kitchens." Esthetically, Davies says on the panel ready ver- sion they took the front buttons on the unit away com- pletely and now have a small remote control. "You would only ever use the remote if you need to inter- rupt the cycle to add another dirty dish. Otherwise you don't need to touch it," explains Davies. The new line of Bertazzoni convection ovens, specialty ovens and warming drawers offered by Distinctive Appliances brings perfect design flexibility in the buyers' style. "All models, including 30-inch steam ovens, 30-inch speed ovens, microwaves and 30-inch warming drawers are flush mounted with matching features and dimensions," says Jeannie Sasaki, director of marketing. "The new Bertazzoni Professional and Master Series built-in ovens bring the authentic experience of Italian cooking to the heart of users' homes," she says. "Built-in Miele 48-inch pro-style range from Coast Wholesale Appliances; LG Pedestal washer from Midnorthern Appliance; Discovery iQ 36-inch Dual-Fuel range from Dacor Appliances; DishDrawer dishwasher from Fisher & Paykel Appliance Inc.
