FEBRUA RY 2016 | 17 PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY MAPEI INC. Restoration Products & Services Flooring is another focus for products and systems targeting restoration projects. In 2014, Mapei Inc. introduced a new single-source system for polished concrete floors. Each product in the system plays a role in providing both the functional and esthetic benefits of polished concrete. Ultratop PC is a high-flow, quick-setting, self-levelling cementitious topping designed for pol- ishing. Ideal for applications of under two inches, this resurfacing material is suitable for both interior and exterior use and cures quickly. Mapecrete Hard LI is a water-based, VOC-free, lithium silicate solution used to densify, seal and dust-proof horizontal concrete surfaces. Floors treated with this product should be more durable and easier to maintain. Another product, Mapecrete Protector FF, increases both the sheen and stain resistance of polished concrete floors. A special grout, called Ultratop PF, is designed to seal pinholes and other surface defects that may be formed during the polishing process. It mixes to a very fluid consistency making it easy to work the material into the surface. "It's a full package for polished con- crete floors. It can be used for restaurants, malls, hall- ways, colleges, schools, hospitals and airports," says Roger Pratt, business manager, CRS division at Mapei. The system can be used instead of polyurethane when a concrete surface needs to be redone. "It's going very well in the U.S. and Canada. I think it's going to be one of our top sellers," Pratt says. Sometimes floors have large, deep sags in them, and many quality products, though strong, can be unsuit- ably heavy for application where the structural capacity of the building might be stretched. Maxxon Corporation recently introduced a low-density, ultra-lightweight cement called Level-Right LDF for severely out-of-level floors. It provides some sound and thermal insulation with a weight of only 20 per cent of regular concrete. "The big thing is how little weight it adds to floor assembly – approximately two pounds per square foot at one-inch thick and can be feather edged. It has high compressive strength up to 500 psi and is self-dry- ing. This allows for next day capping with a Maxxon underlayment. The benefit to the general contractor is the days saved in waiting for the underlayment to dry to an acceptable level so floor goods can be installed. A ¾-inch pour typically dries in five to seven days where a 3-½-inch pour typically dries in four to eight weeks, depending upon environmental conditions," says Benjamin Rousu, Great Lakes regional manager at Maxxon. "It's perfectly targeted for restoration," he adds. Mapecrete Hard LI installation.
