Spring Cycling It's time to dig those bicycles out of the garage and get them geared up for another season of riding. We checked in with Scout Gray, education program manager at HUB Cycling, for the ABCs on how to get your bike back into prime shape. MEMBERS SAVE BRAKES CHAIN AIR Even bicycle tires that have only been sitting unused for a month or two will have lost some pressure. Use a pump you have at home to top up the psi, or bring it to a local shop — most provide air free of charge. "A properly inflated tire means less flats and a comfier ride," says Gray. He also recommends you wipe down the rims of the wheels with a clean, dry rag, which makes the wheels and brakes last longer. Before setting out on that first ride, squeeze each brake lever separately to make sure the brakes work. "Each brake should lock up its respective wheel, and you should not be able to touch your brake lever all the way back to the handle," he says. For bicycles equipped with rim, rather than disc brakes, inspect the pads and see if you can clearly spot ridges with gaps. No gaps means the brake pads are dangerously worn away, and should be checked out by a shop. Lube up your bike chain to ensure smooth, quiet operation when you're pedalling. Use proper lube that is designed to last rather than WD-40, which wears away quickly. Apply sparingly, and wipe down with a rag. "Excess oil dripping off your chain causes dirt to stick, but not enough creates that dry squeak that no one wants to hear." Have more cycling-related quest i o n s ?
