Miller suggests getting an alignment done every 24,000 km. 4 Timing belt replacement Although longer-lasting timing chains are common, some new vehicles, and some made before 2006, still use timing belts. "Normally consumers forget about it, but as soon as the belt breaks, it costs you a lot of money to fix it," he says. As an example, the difference can be paying $500 to have it replaced beforehand, compared to up to $2,500 if the belt snaps on its own, potentially causing other engine damage. 5 Brake servicing The brake system needs to be lubricated and readjusted every 12,000 to 20,000 km to keep them in working order. "That ensures all the parts inside are still moving, and increases the lifespan of brake pads or brake shoes," says Miller, adding brake noise and excess dust indicates it's time for a service. n – Benjamin Yong 1.
