While many British Columbians have fond memories of visiting as a child, or of accompanying children of their own,… far fewer are aware that Science World's reach extends well beyond the dome, piquing curiosity and boosting science literacy in some of the province's most far-‰ung regions. A mission-based, charitable organization whose work relies on community collaboration, government partnerships and private sector support, Science World is a leader in science education in B.C., and maintains a steadfast commitment to nurturing the…next…generation of scientists, innovators and technoloy leaders through inquiry-based educational programs—both inside its walls, and out. "We dedicate…a large portion of…our…resources to…inspiring kids, teens and adults all across the province, and we've brought fun and inspiring…science to thousands of events across B.C., including to some of the most remote communities in the province, and helped scientists and innovators connect as mentors with the learners in their communities," says Bryan Tisdall, president and CEO of Science World. One of Science World's province-wide initiatives is their On the Road program, which has visited thousands of students at schools across B.C., including remote communities like Dease Lake, Toad River, Prince George and Haida Gwaii. Run by Science World's own talented team of science facilitators, the program uses interactive demonstrations to engage children and youth in science and stimulate learning, and has reached over 1 million students, kindergarten to Grade 12, since its inception. In addition to its in-school outreach programs, the organization's online resource website provides free, curriculum-based science activities for educators. Find it at www.scienceworld.ca/ resources. Although the organization has connected with over 13 million visitors since it opened—inspiring countless inquisitive minds and sparking abiding passions for science and technoloy along the way—for Tisdall, its mission goes far beyond science education. "Science World plays an important… role in helping B.C. develop a healthy, prosperous, sustainable society and knowledge-based economy. Some of the kids we inspire…will become our future engineers, scientists, mathematicians…and technologists," says Tisdall. "And whether or not you're aiming for a career in science, we encourage people of all ages to stay curious, and have fun…learning more… about the science behind the world around them."
