What do I need to know from a tax perspective? A: If you are a US citizen, you will continue to have income tax fi ling obligations in the US. As a resident of Canada, you will also be subject to Canadian income tax on your worldwide income. It may be possible to reduce the burden of double taxation through the application of foreign tax credits and treaty exemptions. Q: British Columbia is a great market for me to expand my service business from the United States. How will my operations be taxed? A: The short answer is: it depends. Your operations will be subject to varying levels of income taxation depending on whether your specifi c circumstances lead you to be "carrying on business" or have a "permanent establishment" in Canada. Determining factors will include whether you have a physical presence in Canada, whether you solicit and complete orders in Canada, and how long your employees and subcon- tractors spend in Canada performing services. And don't forget about the possible payroll and sales tax implications .
