When do you get to eat dinner? "In our fourth season of CBC News, I still haven't figured out when I should be eating dinner. I end up grabbing food at different times, often eating at my work desk. We don't really have 'family dinners' since the kids aren't here; and since Nancy eats at a normal dinnertime." What do you do for exercise? "For 22 years, every Saturday morning for three hours, I have been playing ball hockey at UBC." Where's your favourite place in the house? "Nancy recently came home on a weekend and laughed when she saw that I was sitting in the same spot where she'd left me hours earlier – on our comfy brown couch. There I read the Globe and Mail, the Vancouver Sun and, on Sundays, the New York Times with my coffee. I used to treat this like a work assignment, having to read the papers throughout, but I finally realized that I can actually skip articles I'm not interested in!" Any plans to downsize? "We haven't felt that the home is too large for us with the boys [James and Daniel] gone, even with four bedrooms and a finished basement. Being an old house, it has small rooms that keep it comfortably cozy and efficient. And we love the location across from a park and close to downtown." Where do you travel when not on assignment? "We travel to Florida, where my sister lives. James is a huge Blue Jays fan, and their training camp is in the beautiful little town of Dunedin. Even non- baseball fans appreciate how magical spring training camp is. James and I were sitting right behind home plate this year for the first pitch of the season." What about visiting family? "I was born in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. The last time I was there was 34 years ago. Daniel suggested we go and take my parents, so we did last Christmas. I was able to meet the huge network of relatives I hadn't seen in many years." n 24 bca a .cOm WiNteR 2015 at home profile at home profile piANo mAN "The house's previous owners searched for this rare brown grand piano to match the home's woodwork. I played when I was a child, and have been saying I will take it up again since Daniel, who plays well, doesn't live here anymore." souveNir sHeLf "I was in the Far North in 1990 in Iglulik for the signing of the agreement-in-principle to create Nunavut. There I bought this simple 'Mother and Child' soapstone carving."
