22 BCA A .COM WINTER 2015 AT HOME profile Tell us about your house. "The house was built in 1913, when there wouldn't have been many homes in this Fairview Slopes area. It was used as a preschool 70 years ago. Our living room was originally two separate rooms; previous owners impulsively combined them – and took out a support wall. We haven't had any issues yet…" Any surprises come up while you were remodelling? "When we renovated the kitchen in 2007, the contractor opened the walls and found that the support beams were very badly charred from a fire. He was puzzled as to how a fire could have been serious enough to cause that much damage but not destroy the whole house." What's the first thing you do when you get home? "I get home most nights close to 9 p.m. I turn on the TV to unwind since by then my brain is tired after a busy lead-up at work and then two hours of live TV. If big news occurs, I may stay for the 10 p.m. late edition. When the boys were young, I'd get home and keep going, to spend time with them. Now I relax." Do you have a favourite TV show? "I watch a lot of hockey and news, and a couple of weird interests: I am hooked on Pawn Stars, about a pawn shop in Las Vegas, and Mayday that investigates airplane crashes. I also PVR Modern Family and Brooklyn Nine-Nine." REAR-VIEW WINDOW "The kitchen's beautiful stained-glass windows were originally in the living room. I envied that my friend was able to have his kids play on this wraparound deck while they watched inside. Our kids then did the same."
