C ranes, shipping containers and century- old warehouses frame the North Shore Mountains on the far side of sparkling Burrard Inlet – a dramatic view from Vancouver's latest hipster hangout and design haven. Just east of Gastown, Railtown is a "microhood" that's historic yet modern. HISTORY LESSON The neighbourhood boomed after the railway arrived in 1887. Classic warehouses still line Railway Street, including the 1925 Imperial Rice Milling Co. building, where artists holed up in 1986 to spur a new bylaw allowing work/ live privileges in studios. Today, artists are still front and centre. Ice Box Gallery (iceboxgallery.com) showcases art in what was once cold storage for the fish industry. And a 1913 fish-processing plant is now home to the visual art studios of SFU's School for the Contemporary Arts (sfu.ca/sca). LOCAVORE MENU For a small 'hood, Railtown is a densely packed foodie destination. At its heart is Postmark Brewing (postmarkbrewing.com) in the Settlement Building, also home to Belgard Kitchen (belgardkitchen.com) and Vancouver Urban Winery (vancouverurbanwinery.com). Nearby are Railtown Café (railtowncafe.ca), comfort food and people-watching central; Italian eatery Ask For Luigi (askforluigi.com); and Cadeaux Bakery (cadeauxbakery.com). DESIGN SENSE Railtown houses a who's who of the stylish set making for great window-shopping and street- art viewing. At the Jan Kath showroom, canvas-like rugs are displayed inside while a mural outside mimics the skyline just beyond – a glorious cacophony of cranes, railways, mountains and sea. n – Barb Sligl Vancouver's Railtown A mash-up of industrial grit and urban style, this neighbourhood has "it" factor THE NEXT HOT 'HOOD South Cambie Village is an up-and-coming Vancouver neighbourhood emerging at Cambie and Southwest Marine Drive. With a number of condo developments going up, the area is set to transform into a pedestrian village where residents can live, work and shop within a vibrant new community right on the Canada Line. Watch for a new BCAA Service Location to join this evolving neighbourhood in early 2016.
