Aside from keeping you warm, you can roll it up to create a makeshift seat when needed. 6. FLASHLIGHT This is a must. A flashlight is a lifesaver whether you're using it to shine around the engine bay or to illuminate a dark and wet street. Together with a reflective vest, it helps you remain visible to other drivers. 5. WINTER JACKET Even if you don't wear one when driving, carry a warm jacket in your vehicle during the frigid months. This will shield you from the elements if you need to leave the vehicle in an emergency situation, or if you experience a breakdown and need to walk. 3. GLOVES Don't forget about keeping your extremities warm. A good pair of waterproof/windproof gloves will protect your hands if you have to brush snow off your windshield or sit in the cold waiting for a tow truck. Stu Miller, General Manager of BCAA's Auto Service Centres in Kelowna and Penticton, recommends seven items that will keep you warm and safe in case the unexpected happens while you're on the road. 7. BOOTS Bring along waterproof winter boots that will keep your feet dry and insulated while you're facing the elements. n 2. NON-PERISHABLE FOOD A stash of compact, nutritious and storable food in your vehicle can come in handy anytime. Granola bars, for example, take up little room and can provide a good source of energy if you're stuck or stranded. 4. REFLECTIVE VEST Car trouble? Wearing a bright reflective vest warns oncoming traffic that you're out on the road or walking on the shoulder.
